A Short Introduction to the Books
"Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie."
This is the opening which every reader of The Lord of the Rings will see when
they first open the book. Just eight lines and a person is instantly taken
into the world of Middle-earth.
The Lord of the Rings, which is one of the
greatest masterpieces ever written, shares its story in such a way that one
weeps at the end of it. Tolkien has mastered his writing style so that most
who read it, will want to do so over and over.
When Tolkien began writing his own language while he was in high school, he
realized that a language cannot just 'appear' in the world, it must have a
history; a story to tell. So, The Silmarillion was exploded onto papers, note
cards, books, and even letters. Poems that he had written throughout his life
suddenly became stories; only growing and bound by no limitations.
For all of
his life, Tolkien worked on his 'love', The Silmarillion, and, in fact, he never
saw it published.
