I’m sure there must be some female dwarfs! They are a race not some kind of slug (no offence slug, it’s just you dont mate) How exactly would they have babies if there was no women? Or do the lady dwarfs just have beards and stuff so they look like men? I’ve no idea of the answer to any of these questions so if you do then share it with me please! I don’t think Tolkien says any thing about it but if you know other wise then tell me. Thanks

Well as far as I can remember, there is one (single I think?) mention of dwarven women, and it’s in the Hobbit_ about Fili and Kili being related to Thorin, on their mother’s side; no more than that (unless it’s in certain chunks of HOME and Letters). I’ve heard of no other dwarf women, though I assume that they did exist, just without entering into lore.

There’s lots of mentionings of Dwarf women. Appendix A of The Return of the King even tells us the name of one, Dis. There are also parts of The Histories of Middle-earth that tell more about the Dwarves, including that all of them, male and female alike, are bearded from birth. So yes, to non-Dwarves, the women would look like the men.

Not to mention that we know there are very few Dwarf women and that they only venture out of their homes at great need, so it is certain that there were Dwarf women, and that also explains why they do not often appear in stories.  Even when female Dwarves do leave the house, they are in appearance, voice, and garb so similar to male Dwarves that other races cannot tell the difference between the two.  If you dig through the Plaza you can find lots of other threads dealing with this subject.

And of course, welcome to the Plaza and to the Lore Fora!

Thank you all very much for the infomation  I am now quite satified with the existence of dwarf women. As i am quite new to the plaza, i am not really sure of every thing yet (thanks for the welcome Arvellas) could some one please tell me how to close this thread, or do i not need to do that? thanks in advance.

There are indeed Dwarven women, but as Gimli says they look so alike Dwarven males that they are constently mistaken for Dwarven men, that must be swell and terribly embarassing for the Dwarven women unless they like and think it’s an honor to be compared with males so they think also are mighty Dwarven Warriors!!

Tallullah-Only Rulers and Admins can close threads here on the Plaza, and they only do so if the discussion becomes, say, non-Plaza-appropriate of full of spam, etc., so there realy is no need to close this thread.  Usually threads are just left open so that people can continue the discussion if they happen to find a new point.

Arvellas: Just a little sidenote, but moderators can as well - in this case, that Mod is Tuna.

Kalevala: Gimli only says that in Peter Jackson’s movie version of the Two Towers. He doesn’t actually say that in the books - the myth about Dwarves coming from stone was actually discussed by Tolkien as a belief that ignorant folk had about the origins of Dwarves.
