Elven Army of Rivendell
Gollum's Escape
The Elven Army of Rivendell recently had a large scale RPG that ran from May
7th to May 17th. A ten day long role-play, and it was huge, spanning well
over 1000 posts in total.
The event begun one early plaza morning when General Laebeth announced to
the elves that alas! Golum had escaped from the elves at Mirkwood! The Elven
Army gathered at once to the announcement and set off towards the great
river immediately. Arlo, (Nibinrambiaon) Sent some of his troops to check
the surrounding area, and before long, they return to say the coast is
clear. Settling down for the night, the elves erected a large bonfire and
waited for Laebeth’s orders. The following day, Laebeth organised the
troupes and before long, they are all on their way over the Misty Mountains.
As the elves were riding through the mountain passes, a large flock of
ravens began to attack the army. Many of the elves attempted to fire arrows
and defend themselves from the onslaught with their swords, but to no avail.
Some elves however, had other ideas, and began to call upon their dragons to
assist them. The dragons had a grand effect on the ravens, using their magic
to destroy the birds. But then, suddenly, the elves discovered to their
dismay that the leaders, Laebeth, Arlo, Mori (Lady_Anmoriel) and Arele (?)
had been taken prisoner by another group of ravens, while the elves were
preoccupied with the first flock! But, thanks to the extended family reunion
between Mithro and Lel, the ravens grew tired of flying around with their
load and promptly dropped them. Elnarsil was ready though, and created a
fountain to collect the falling leaders, and the army was on their way
again.
They crossed the Misty Mountains without any problems and then crossed the
Great River, and headed into the mucky, and all ‘round dirty Mirkwood. The
elves discovered quite quickly, that lighting fires was not such a fantastic
idea when some became light-headed due to the lack of oxygen. So, in the
darkness of Mirkwood, the elves decided to rely almost completely on the
trusty skills of their animal companions. Not long after however, the army
stoped in shock as one of the tigers let out a tremendous roar. A glowing
was seen directly in front of the elves, and their general, Laebeth, took 10
of her soldiers and went ahead to scout out the area. Soon though, a scream
of rage was heard and the army surged forward. Many weapons were drawn, but
the major fears of the elves were lain to rest as they discovered Laebeth in
fine health but very angry. Someone had sabotaged the Army’s precious water
supply! The elves did their best to control the leaking and succeeded to
some degree, but as they started to relax, the horses and other animals
suddenly panicked and ran off with all the elves supplies. Only to compound
the horror, the elves were suddenly bombarded by apple and cream pies by a
clown! Poor elves! Thankfully though, the evilness that is a clown
disappeared and was replaced by a dark clad figure, which then transformed
into… a what? A Balrog?! Indeed! A Balrog! But as it headed for Laebeth, it
suddenly transformed into the dark cloaked figure that was by this stage
unconscious. Orcs then ran onto the scene and picked up the figure, and ran
off with it into the night.
After the interesting interlude was concluded, the Army continued on its
journey towards Mirkwood. They walked on for a while, with the army’s dogs
being used as scouts. A pack of them returned, and began to morph into
things so unspeakably horrific no one managed to describe them. The elves
began to attack the bewitched dogs, and after a few moments, they
disappeared into clouds of black smoke.
The elves then continued, and Arlo’s scouts returned to the main body of
elves. Reporting the presence of Mirkwood spiders in the vicinity, the army
readied themselves for battle. Hesitantly making their way further into the
wood, they came across no spiders, but were surprised by a lone dwarf and a
small group of Silvan elves sitting around a small fire. Aurethil recognised
one of the elves sitting there as one of her friends from her former home in
Mirkwood, Thilnaur. After discussing what had been going on in the last few
days, the Silvan elves gave the army some food supplies and they moved on
towards Thranduil’s House further north. As they were however, many of the
elves were hit with a confusion spell and begun to wander around aimlessly
and mumbling incoherently. Thankfully, the ever-watchful Elrond alerted them
to the spell, and they were cured instantly. They continued on, but shortly
after, the trees themselves began to attack the walking elves. Avoiding as
many conflicts with the trees that they could, they soon discovered that
there were many of the infamous Mirkwood Spiders encircling the army. A
great battle follows between the elves and the disgusting insects. (No
offence to Ara!) During the battle, Nile was captured and despite the
efforts of some of the elves, he was dragged off by one of the spiders. The
battle raged on for quite sometime, but finally the elves were victorious!
Laebeth then sang a chant to the trees, and the elves were able to continue
along unhindered.
She then stood up and gave the elves two choices on a path to cross the
Mirkwood Mountains. They could either sail up the Enchanted River and risk
the touch of it which sends the person to a never ending sleep, or cross the
mountains on foot and face the larger, more dangerous spiders. The elves
discussed it quickly and all decided on taking on the spiders. The decision
made, they quickly made there way through the passes. Almost instantly, the
giant spiders attacked the army. The battle was joined, and it was more
ferocious than the first. Many of the elves were injured, but as the healing
powers of the elves are unsurmountable none were killed. During the long
battle with the spiders, the attack was renewed by a patrol of orcs, and the
battle continued. The Rivendell elves were starting to look desperate as the
battle wore on, but suddenly, a large number of elves in dark greens and
greys began to assault the hoard of spiders and orcs, and before long, most
were dead or running.
The Army finally reached Thranduil’s Halls, and they rested and feasted
while the generals discussed the plans with Thranduil himself. To the relief
of many, the horses and other animals were discovered to be safe in the
hands of the Silvan elves.
After a night of feasting and much sleeping –and the discovery of another
dragon supposedly- the Army, rested and well, departed from Thranduil’s
House, along the river in boats. Because of the travelling arrangements, the
elves were forced to leave their beloved animals behind. Nile had then come
floating down the river in the company of a dwarf to the relief of all, and
he joined the Army once again.
The army floated down towards the river to Dol Guldur where it was believed
that Sauron’s minions had taken the recaptured Golum.
They had not been sailing down the river for long before a giant octopus
suddenly attacked them. The elf set their dragons and drats against the
octopus, and individually shot arrows or cut off various tentacles off the
monstrous thing. Orcs were also shooting arrows at the Elves from the shore.
Ally quickly bought the Rivendell Defence members over to one side to combat
the orcs, and the rest of the army finished off the Octopus.
After defeating the Orcs and Octopus, the elves landed and found themselves
faced with a large swampy expanse. There was no way to border it, and so
they were forced to cross it, which proved to be no easy task. They debated
may ways of crossing the swamp, from skis, to boats, but finally decided to
scale along trees, and when that wasn’t possible, to create rope bridges. A
few of the elves stayed at the edge of the swamp to make up arrows to
restock the depleting amount the elves had. When they had finished, they
tried to catch up to the rest of the army, but the swamp had hidden their
tracks. After wandering around for a while however, they found the rest of
the elves. While they had been making arrows, the rest of the army had
decided against scale the trees and simply had the dragons take people over
the swamp, a few at a time, making the trip a fair bit faster, though for
some, no doubt a lot less comfortable.
Once across the swamp, the elves rested for the night, then started
travelling again the following morning. As the Army organised itself to
continue, a hobbit walked into their campsite, surprising many of the elves.
The hobbit stayed with the travelling army for a short time, before curling
up and going to sleep. After a few looks of amusement by the elves, they
continued on and came across an evil stream. After pondering how to cross it
without touching the flowing waters, a dragon kindly froze the stream with
it’s breath and the army quickly passed over it.
Continuing with the journey, the elves came across a band of the woodmen –
allies of Sauron. The woodmen immediately attacked, and another battle
occurred. It didn’t take long to subdue them, and the Army continued on
their long trek.
They Elven Army finally reached Dol Guldur. Laebeth talked to the army,
encouraging them and Elrond rode up alongside the army. Sauron also made an
appearance, standing behind his own minions.
Shortly before the battle started in earnest, the esteemed Poetry Maia rode
into the scene and watched from the back lines.
The battle commenced, starting with the usual prepping up and organising.
Funny, were there no cheerleaders? There should have been… but when the
battle was joined, arrows flew, swords sang and minions screamed. The Dark
Lord himself pounced upon the Poetry Maia and imprisoned her in a chamber in
which it seemed no escape was possible for the rhyming one.
The battle continued for many posts in a rather short amount of time,
resulting in many simultaneous posts and much confusion. Sauron was busy
tickling and all ‘round harassing the Poetry Maia, and many orcs and minions
were being slain.
The Lady Elrond, while astride a dragon, made to dig through the mandragorah
paste of the walls of Dol Guldur as Vivienne distracted the Dark Lord with
fanciful, and rather fictitious compliments.
The battle continued, and many different races visited the battlefield. The
dwarves, the Gondorians and even the aloof Istari were represented.
After many hours and many posts, the Dark Lord, Sauron left the battlefield.
It seemed like he was in great need of a game of tennis. The balloons and
the pink bunnywunnies continued to fly however, and as the minions lost
hope, Sauron stealthily returned to the battlefield, sweating from his
tennis ordeal, and spirited Golum away from Dol Guldur.
So indeed, the elves had won the great battle of Dol Guldur, but as Sauron
whisked away Golum, the great efforts of the Elven Army of Rivendell were as
nothing. The elves sadly returned to Rivendell but all were gladdened by the
thought that they had beaten the hoards of minions in the battle.
