Aduchil

"Born in the last era before the light of the Two Trees was exctinct, Aduchil grew up in the household of Fingolfin in the fair city of Tirion. For long his life proceeded peacefully, and he grew up educated as any other child would be who lived under such circumstances. However the tranquillity of the Noldor was disrupted as Morgoth slew Finwë and stole the Silmarils. As a kinsman to Fingolfin, Aduchil’s father was obliged to follow his liege to the lands of Middle-earth and he took his son and wife with him. The theft of the ships at Alqualondë he would take no part in however, and he kept Aduchil back as well. Instead they followed Fingolfin across the Helcaraxë, and here Aduchil tasted the first reward for his rebellion. Aduchil’s parents both perished in the grinding ice and he found himself for the first time, but not the last, alone.

Having no other choice he continued to follow Fingolfin and lived with his lord in Hithlum, serving in the many battles of Beleriand. In his childhood he was taught how to play the harp, but having no skill in words he never performed as a bard, and his grief at his parents’ death he could not explain in words. However a lamentation he made when he heard of the news that Fingolfin had died before the very gates of Angband, and now lay buried in the hidden valley of Gondolin. This was the second time he wept, but he was still young and he found the strength to overcome his grief despite his solitude. Thus he fought on, and marched with Fingon to Nirnaeth Arnoediad. Here he witnessed the end of any hope the Noldor ever had of defeating Morgoth, and what friends and kinsmen he had were slain in that great, fateful battle.

Indeed Aduchil would have been slain too as he lay wounded and helpless on the battlefield. But the Elves from Gondolin took pity on him during their retreat, seeing that he was still alive. Thus he was spared from death and allowed to see the wonders of Gondolin. For a while his sorrow was healed in the peace of the city, through the friendship with Glorfindel, whom he served as his new liege, and by visiting the green mound where Fingolfin lay buried. However this would not for long either. The city was betrayed and its inhabitants slain or driven away. Aduchil managed to flee, keeping close to his lord, but he could not stand by Glorfindel’s side as a Balrog came against them. The demon was slain but it was also the end of Glorfindel, and for the second time Aduchil lamented the loss of one who had broken his solitude.

Many years passed as the War of Wrath was won, and Aduchil wandered in the land of Gil-galad, serving him as he had served his predecessors. Ever was there a seed of yearning for other lands and restlessness in him however, and thus he travelled to Eregion when that realm was built. For once he did not travel alone, for in the years that had passed he had found a family, and he believed he should watch his sons grow up in Eregion. Indeed so it seemed for a while and that the curse that haunted the Exiles had finally rested. In those days he also befriended Laebeth, the only friend that he still has from such old days. Many a day or night they could spend, sitting by the holly trees and discussing the ancient days that Aduchil could remember. However such bliss was not to last long. Sauron led his army against Eregion, and Aduchil rode out in a sortie led by Celeborn. They could not return to the city Ost-in-Edhil, and was forced to watch it burn from a distance. For the last time, Aduchil lamented and wept, understanding now what his fate was in Middle-earth.

He now truly regretted that he had ever left Tirion, and he begun to understand why he was restless in Middle-earth.

The following centuries Aduchil did not spend in any permanent place. His home was where he was, and he a while both amongst the Elves of Imladris and the Galadhrim of Lothlórien. However neither place could keep him constantly and he travelled far and wide in an attempt to forget the yearning he had inside. His road might take him back to Imladris, but he knows eventually that he must swallow his pride as a Noldorin Exile and accept the pardon so he may go west to Tirion if he ever wishes to be at peace with himself."
