One Thousand Islands Beneath the Sea

One thousand islands beneath the sea
sinking like cast pebbles in a pond:
each one a forgotten thought--
whispers of a plea.

They are one thousand forgotten faces,
whose rough visages were once caressed
by childish hands that knew of nothing
but unconditional love.

They are one thousand of our abandoned dreams,
drifting just beneath our consciousness,
in a silent kingdom below the sea,
an Atlantis awaiting the day of its restoration.

We are the one thousand islands beneath the sea
lapped at by rising waves until we are torn from the chain of Life,
snapping away like creamy pearls to scatter into unknown waters,
like a thousand wishes blowing into the wind-- blown kisses…

…never to be caught.

Guilds and Groups

This has been an exciting month for the Host. Many new recruits have joined up, and we would like to welcome them all to join the ranks of proud warriors defending Imladris.

New rank icons have been designed by Isiliel, and it is with pride that we wear these on our sleeves (or in our signatures!). Full instructions on how to upload these images into soldiers’ sigs can be found in the Host’s OOC thread. We have had positive feedback on these icons, and I can’t thank Isiliel enough for her work.

The Northern Watch RPG involved the Host taking part in an adventure in the Minas Tirith forum. GM’d by Dhalion De Mein, both the Rangers and the Host of Imladris were involved in battles against foul minion hordes at both Amon Sûl and the plains below the Ettenmoors. The thread has now since closed, but from the Host of Imladris, we’d like to thank Dhalion and the Rangers for inviting us to take part in this RPG.

Back at home, soldiers of the Host have had the opportunity to get to know each other and share tales of their adventures and exploits in battle in the Around the Campfire thread;

“The faces gleamed in the red light, their eyes like those of the stars glittering around them. Although winter was cold and snow was in the air, the Elves felt none of it, but instead rejoiced that once again their stories would be shared among their brothers and sisters in arms, that again their songs would fill the forest air.”

Soldiers both old and new joined in, and were visited by former members of the Host who shared their tales with everyone. This thread was full of atmosphere and storytelling, as well as the dreamy sound of Elven songs within the forests bordering the valley.

Continuing the story from our recent Under Attack RPG, Redemption is currently running. Following a devastating defeat to the orcs, and the destruction of a human village a few short miles from Imladris, the Host has been sent to flush the enemy for good from our borders, and rebuild the settlement;

“ The Host of Imladris was sent forth to protect a village built by Edain hunters and woodsmen, five miles from the ford of the Bruinen. Orcs were sighted nearby; orcs who violently invaded the village, throwing its people into terror. Negotiations between the Elves and the humans broke down, the battle was lost, and the village was utterly destroyed. Evil had won the day. The Host was ordered by Lord Elrond to return to Imladris to recover and await instructions. The surviving villagers, including the son of the slain Edain Leader, who had assumed leadership of his people, had been invited to Rivendell as a safe haven. Lord Elrond had sworn to make amends. He made a promise. And it must be kept.”

It looks like the Host is making good Elrond’s promise, as they fought with ferocity and courage to slay their enemies. Split into two groups, Kori and Ariethil got their first tastes of responsibility, each leading a group of soldiers into battle. They fought bravely, and the battle was won. The Host is now preparing the ruined village for the arrival of the Architects’ Guild, led by Aikanár, to supervise the rebuilding of the settlement.

Finally, with the ending of the Around the Campfire thread, a new activity has opened, At the Butts. Please, no jokes – a butt is a place for practicing archery! Soldiers have the opportunity here to compete against each other, practice their accuracy, or simply get to know each other better.

I’d like to thank Ril and Aikanár for their hard work, and the members of the Host who have taken part in this month’s activities. There will be many more exciting events and RPGs for you all, and I look forward to seeing what this next month brings.

The Bard and Writer's Guild has had a busy time this month with many activities welcoming bards/writers and visitors alike.

Our main focus this month has been the reopening of the Rainbow's End, the gathering place of the Bards for their off-hours creative wanderings. There, we offer a relaxed place to get to know each other, to practice verse, song and story in a non-judgemental setting and give our newer members a chance to get their feet wet, so to speak, in less intimidating circumstances than a performance or classroom. Several elves new to the valley have joined us there and we are so pleased to see them seeking out the comeraderie of the guild and hope that many more do the same. Come on by, have a drink, share a song or tale and stand on our balcony and enjoy the cool, refreshing spray of our beautiful integral waterfall - complete with the rainbows after which the Inn is named.

In addition, The Bards & Writer's Guild continued their series of Writer's Workshops with this third instalment - Language: Making it feel right. This workshop carried on from the previous one, which dealt with dialogue. In this one, we are looking into how language itself is used, whether narrated or spoken and how it can be used to convey time and place to writing.

There have been interesting discussions so far, the workshop opening with a question of spoken dialogue versus narration followed by comments about vocabulary and personal style. Many interesting points were brought up about social class and personality and its place in creating the language of the piece. All points of discussion are welcome here - everyone is welcome to add your thoughts to the discussion.

As always, the BWG offers a help desk in The Last Homely House where anyone can request assistance with all things bardic. Need a song for a feast? Need a story for your family gathering? Need a bit of verse for your next wedding. The BWG is ready to assist you - just leave your request with the elf on duty and someone will respond to you.

Last but not least, to help celebrate Edenidhrin, the guild conducted a competition to help our beloved Saranna reconstruct her tale which was sadly scattered on the winds. Each participant was given a snippet of the story and had to fill in the part that was missing. Galen provided the outline and our bits of parchment and Tanequil conducted the competition. The Judges were Janowyn, Galen and Tanequil Silverleaf. Many excellent bits were offered up and in the end, the placement was -

1st place to Nurbor
2nd place to Laiannon
3rd place to Shadowheart
And Honorable Mention to Isiliel

Well done to everyone who participated.

Come and join us whether you perform or want to just listen and enjoy. All are welcome at the BWG.

I’m sad to announce it – but this is the end. The end of the 6 th regular debate season that by now has gradually evolved into the playoff stage; with Rivendell out of the game and only Fangorn, Rohan, Minas Tirith and Khazad Dum getting into the final stage. It has been a tough one for Rivendell, with many debaters gone missing (surely must be the evil doing of the opponents!), yet we can be proud of our elves. Despite many difficulties we still managed to field enough people to participate.

The topics were challenging and the judges strict, but it should not stop people from joining the team for the next season. After all – where else would you be able to argue and rebut?

Drill deeper and deeper, until you reach the very heart of knowledge

This day has come. Not just a nice random day in spring but THE day when the Elves of Rivendell finally managed to become plaza wide senior drill champions and got their names written into the annals of drill history.

The final match of the season proved to be exciting and challenging. Everyone familiar with drill knows the Shire team – they are not easy opponents. The officiant, Moggy of Mordor, was vicious as ever (after all what can one expect from a minion, and not just a minion – Sauron himself), throwing hard questions at both teams and enjoying the process by all looks. Yet the elves demonstrated brilliant knowledge of lore and as a result – the most unexpected score of 14-2.

All hail our learned drillers: Ann-thannath, Numelotte, Kabbeh, Celeblin, Galen Aranor, KingofMirkwood and the two captains – Rinerion and Loriwaynen. They are now enjoying the well deserved rest during the off season – but we are sure that next fall they will do equally great.

Under the Paint Covers

A lot has been going on in the EAA in the past months, with the official announcement of the new Co-Curator in Tolotos the former Curator Fuin Elda found herself having more free time to think. Which is something that she should not be allowed to do it seems. With the time it was discussed that the Elven Artist Association was slowly clawing its way along like some poor beast flogged past its breaking point.

As such the Association shut down formally at the beginning of March in order for the Co-Curators to conspire with each other and give the EAA a major case of spring cleaning. This meant that all of the activities that were run solely by the EAA were shut down, with only the joint contest with the Bard and Writers Guild operating.

With everything under wraps though not even the Lords of the Valley know what the two elves in charge are doing. All likelihood being that they do not either. That has not stopped them yet though and the Elven Artist Association is still scheduled to re-open on May 1st.

Healing the Wounds

The last few months have been very interesting in the House of Healing. It began with the cleansing of the House after it was left in shambles when the Tanestor and Minestor were attacked. With it cleaned and put back in order the Aphador class began.

Under the guidance of Lady Aikári and Fuin Elda twenty students from across Middle-earth came to learn the healing techniques of the elves of Imladris. This includes a minion from Mordor, as well as men from Gondor along with elves from our very own Valley. This class has been on going for over a month now and is the fourth class of this level to be taught.

All the while anyone that wishes to take part in the Healers but missed the twenty person sign up can still join as a Taidor. These positions are open at all times and welcomes all races, just like the healers, for the patients that come to the House to heal are always in need of help.

Let the Sparks Fly

As always the Forge has been clanking away with steady business throughout the months. As of late however, the mass influx of new apprentices has slowed down and even come to a complete halt. Not that this seems to be any sort of problem as there are still quite a few apprentices learning the trade.

However the forge lost two of its more prominent members with Anárië and Aikári having to leave. This did not slow down work though - if anything it has sped it up as there are a few apprentices showing great skill in their work that look as if they will soon be able to take up the task of teaching new apprentices should there be any.

That of course is not that large an issue, as with the warm weather coming, the Guild Master always expects apprentices to wander off as most cannot take the heat of the Forge in the warm months. She knows that it is a far more enjoyable task in the cooler months when the heat is more than appreciated at times.

“On your marks! Get set! Go!!” An arrow shot into the air, and the cheetahs were off like a streak of lightning towards the finish lines. Fast and furious, they proved without a doubt that they were the speediest creatures on all of Middle-earth... as long as they could sprint. Longer runs, unfortunately, caused them to fall behind. Sometimes dramatically. It would have been much simpler in most cases for the cheetahs to simply eat their opponents, but alas! This resulted in disqualification or worse. And so the natural course of things was perverted, and the Imladris racing team did not always win.

Another season had come to a close, and the final results were tallied. The winning kingdom was Fangorn, with Mordor and the Shire close behind and Imladris in a respectable fourth. The Elves shuddered when they realized what this meant. The race of champions, held each season for all runners who had won first place in one of the individual races, would be held in the winning kingdom. A trip to Fangorn, so oppressive for Dwarves or Minions, would be a pleasant vacation for tree-loving Elves. The Derby, on the other hand, would be held in the second-place kingdom – Mordor. A vast free-for-all with up to ten racers from each kingdom, it provided a perfect chaotic setting for any minions wishing to bring the demise of individual members of the free peoples. Cheetahs trembled as they raced there, and returned home covered in ash, with cracked and bleeding paws, unwilling to speak of how the journey had gone. Unfortunately, they had no other choice.

So began the final, long-awaited competitions signalling the end of another season. Making their way to Fangorn and Mordor, the great felines lined up with much pouncing and eager playfulness. As the race started they ran their hearts out; the Race of Champions and the Derby tended to bring out more dedication and concentration than any other races, and it showed.

After a long and grueling run, the results came in. The Race of Champions had been close and down to the final seconds. Nenuphar, Merl, Ronaya, and Fuin Elda had all received invitations, and all but Ronaya had managed to find their way to Fangorn Forest. Near the beginning of the race a snake belonging to the minion Miriel Niniel had pulled to the front and had ultimately proved unbeatable, winning first place among the greatest racers of the season. Nenuphar's cheetah Tumbleweed had pulled up close at the last moment, however, and was only a few whiskers behind when she pulled across the finish line. Both Merl and Fuin Elda had made their way up to the middle of the pack, running at speeds that for most races would have sealed a victory and showing that they truly deserved their invitations to this prestigious race.

The Derby finished closely as well, with no one able to predict until the end which team would win. Since each team had only its top six scores factored in, the final count couldn't be tallied until every single racer had crossed the finish line. Ultimately the Riddermark took first place, with Fangorn close behind and Khazad-dûm a further third. Despite this, the Imladris cheetahs had a unique reason to be proud of their participation. Imladris was the only team competing at the Derby who had a full ten participants (the maximum allowed) finish the race. Something small, perhaps, and since only the top six scores were counted it wasn't a necessity. Yet for a team that had struggled only a season earlier with too few racers, all being stretched thin, it was a personal victory to have so many eager and enthusiastic participants. All in all, it was a satisfying end to a good season.

Mae Govannen, Friends of Play!

The House of Play, our Gwaith-i-Teliol has been revived after months of slumber. At the new year's celebration an Egg Hunt put together by the Gamemasters was started. This maze was built in the Valley unbeknownst to many. It spanned many elements, air, water, rock, shadow and even fire, three glorious eggs containing surprises lay hidden in the maze, for the first three participants to find. Though the celebration long ended, the Egg Hunt still continues on. There are many plans that Gildor Alatar and I, his wife, Isil have in store for the Valley. The Gwaith-i-Teliol will be sponsoring many games and activities in the near future.

Though we are new to the House of Play, we hold to our vow. "To fill the Valley with as much fun as possible, for everyone who seeks it!"

Kingdom Events

SCRs of the month!

There was the sound of bells pealing with joy through the silent morning of the valley. It sounded through, disturbed the rests of some, but no one seemed to mind. The bells were sounded in times of danger and celebration, but the Elves of Rivendell all knew that this peal resonated with joy and peace that could only be tied to that of the honour of some of their very own Elven friends.

"Friends," Elrond says, "Today it is time to honor three Elves of our fair home, all of whom have long served with dedication in quiet or very public ways." The beautiful and talented Isil Alatar of the Teliol mi Imladris and artistic contributor extraordinaire to the Host and Kingdom Pages was fully honoured in the presence of Gil-galad, who took leave of absence from the Halls of Mandos for this occasion. Meanwhile two stalwart contributors to the Herald, Nenuphar and Númelottë were also honoured with the respective company of Gildor Inglorion and Elrohir for their services to the drill and racing teams as well as Núme's invaluable efforts in the Houses of Healing.

Indeed, as the Lords would say, we should praise them with great praise. Eglerio hym!

Rivendell success in the ARPYs

This month the ARPYs award ceremonies wound down in Minas Tirith. The Valley had multiple nominations in nearly every category of award and had four outright wins, in the Best Opening Post and Best Male Character (as Oropher in the Fall of Nargothrond) award categories for Anárië Dröttning and again jointly for Anárië and Rilómë for the Best GM category and Morfindel for the Best Female RPer award.

The overall winner of the night, also involved a lot of contributions from the Valley, with associated wins in two other categories (Best Male Character and Best Female) as well as a host of nominations, was the Joint RPG (by Mordor and Imladris) The Fall of Nargothrond. This massive RPG was GM'd by our own Laebeth and Aduchil along with Berúthiel (of Fangorn) and won two of the three RPG categories - Best Historical RPG and top prize for the Best RPG.

Hoth has been hefting the tribute stick mightily for all the winners, and for the RPG categories this has included the entire cast of players, for each categories so for FoN there are a lot of happy RPers walking about Rivendell these last few days! Again hat's off to Fuin Elda for her presentation, graphics and for master-minding the concept and threads. We shall look forward to next year's events avidly!

IK Poetry Report (Season 2 Round 3)

With the season into its third round for this year, the forms and themes seem to be getting a bit unique in their formulation. Council is seeing many to choose from now and they have been trying to bring out newer, not yet seen ones. So far, only one has been done twice, the Kyrielle in the first season and in this one. Many new ideas are in the process of revamping those Quick Fire rounds that everybody did sometime ago from the thoughts of Fergus of KD. Instead of being Lore and all Tolkien shaped, council is going to make them a bit more free and have special themes included. This should help (so we hope anyway) to draw in poets from not only IK, but also those that just wish to write on the said theme.

As for Council, we are seeing much growth in our teams. Not only are they getting more creative in their writings we've noticed, but they’re all doing so great in getting things done, in and on time, as well as working together more strongly. Some teams have also grown. Hopefully those ads we send out are working and each team will have at least 6 members on at all times. The timing seems to be the biggest factor with school and real life concerns, as we all know how that goes. *g* So with that, lets begin our Round 3 coverage shall we?

For the theme of this round we chose Smaug the Golden, which if any knows how great that is, one can only imagine the poems seen with this interesting theme. There were poems in which you would think Smaug himself were talking, some on the outer thoughts of his life, and some more lorish. All were great though nevertheless. The Forms were very inspirational. The Rispetto was the one, The Cascade the other.

Here they are broken down for your pleasure.

Rispetto

A Rispetto, an Italian form of poetry, is a complete poem of two rhyme quatrains with a strict meter. The meter is usually iambic tetrameter with a rhyme scheme of abab ccdd.
A Heroic Rispetto is written in Iambic pentameter, usually featuring the same rhyme scheme. For this poem, the syllable count can be one of the following: 11-11-11-11 or 8-8-8-8.

Cascade

Cascade, a form created by Udit Bhatia, is all about receptiveness, but in a smooth cascading way like a waterfall.
The poem does not have any rhyme scheme; therefore, the layout is simple. Say the first verse has three lines.
Line one of verse one becomes the last line of verse two. To follow in suit, the second line of verse one becomes the
last line of verse three. The third line of verse one now becomes the last line of verse four, the last stanza of the
poem. See the structure example below.
a/b/c, d/e/A, f/g/B, h/i/C
To make the Cascade an even longer poem, use more lines in verse one. For example,
if verse one has 6 lines, the poem must have seven stanzas so that each line of verse one is reused as a refrain in
each following stanza (a cascading effect).

For Match 1, hosted in Imladris, the teams were as follows: Riddermark, Imladris, Mordor, and Minas Tirith. The results from this match are as such.

Winners by Scores:

Riddermark 117
Minas Tirith 116
Imladris 115
Mordor 115

From Match 2 hosted in Mordor, they were Isengard, The Shire, Fangorn, Lothlorien, Khazad-dûm and those results are as follows.

Winners by Scores:

Lothlorien 119.5
Isengard 118
The Shire 118
Fangorn 112.5
Khazad-dûm 111

As you can see, the Teams were close in their scoring, which means a great match for all. Creativity is something that is what I love the most about this IK Competition. So many minds working together and in the end, some of the best poetry I've seen derives from this.

Congratulations to both Riddermark and Lothlorien for your wins.

And that my friends, is a wrap. Until next time, may the wind always be at your back, the calm seas beneath your feet.

Artist interview ~ Narija

GD: Where were you born, how long have you lived there, what type of things would you say are good about where you live, your special likes there, etc?
NG: I was born in Zagreb, capital of small European country called Croatia and I have lived here ever since. Zagreb is our biggest city, but when you compare it to New York, its size is minute, like one NY's neighbourhood . It is not that I don't like my birth town, but to be completely honest I dream about the day when I'll move to some smaller and more peaceful town. My dearest place in whole city is Lake Jarun, an artificial lake, but surrounded with many trees and all kind of plants. I spend the most of my free time there since I am a rower and that is our rowing track. It is very good that Zagreb is placed on foothills of mountain Medvednica and you can always escape from town's crowds into the mountain forests.

GD: When did you start doing the type art, whether pictures, drawings, terragen or others, that you do now, and why?
NG: I started to do silk painting when I was about 13 years old and it was due to the strange coincidence. A friend bought me a book about silk painting and at first I had no idea what to do with it. The idea for me to do something artistic was purely abstraction. Then one of my mom's friends came and said that she had been on some classes of silk painting and she showed me some basics. Since then I improved my skills myself.

When it comes to photography, I started taking photos just several months ago because I bought myself a camera. Since my dad is interested in photography he taught me some things but I am mostly experimenting myself.

GD: What things do you like to see in your art, as in scenes, views?
NG: I love nature, beautiful landscapes, flowers, animals, water… anything that has a connection with living creatures. I believe I have a special feeling for colors, and when I see scenery that I like, I automatically create a silk shawl in my head. I try not to draw that scenery, because my talents in that area are very modest, but to show it with colors. That is why I often hear people tell me that this one looks like water and that one like summer. I am very happy when I hear that.

GD: Where did you learn how to use programs if any you use, and which do you use?
NG: If I use some program it is definitely Photoshop. I can't say that I have learned to use it, but I know something about it. I learned in part in Ran's tutorial that I found on The Poetry Corner & Fan-Fiction Kingdom Pages. When I have nothing to do I take Photoshop and play with some photos to see what will turn out.

GD: What sort of hobbies do you enjoy? Activities you like doing in spare time, real life and plaza wise?
NG: Being a completely sporty girl, my main hobby is rowing. Most of my spare time I spend in my club and that is what makes me happy. When I manage to find more time beside school and training I love to read. And of course doing something in relation with my artwork. For the Plaza I always manage to find at least several minutes per day, just to see what new has happened.

GD: Are you forever expanding your art, wanting to create new and exciting things? If yes, what kind?
NG: I bought a book about silk painting so I am trying to work with new techniques of painting. I experiment with photography, watch pics of professional photographers and read some books. Photoshop is always welcome to make something new and different…

GD: Are you in school? If yes what are you studying for, going for later on?
NG: I am in school, mathematical one. This year I will graduate and then to further education in a university. I am very much interested in ecology and archeology, but what I will choose I still don't know. Ask me that in a year's time.

GD: Do you plan on going further with your art, and how did you get into your art?
NG: If you are thinking about getting professional, I don't think so. I do photography for fun and that is where I will stay. About silk, I don't know. I can sell it, actually I do that, but it is mostly to people I know as gifts. But who knows what will come of that in the end.

GD: What things on the plaza are you a member of, what are the funnest things you like there? NG: I am a member of house Hrvatska II, where are gathered people from Croatia. And, yes I am a member of Lothlorien kingdom. I like to do some easy and fun IC activities, adore carnivals, and things like that. Lately I started to enjoy riddles. And of course my dearest part of Plaza is A&FF forum.

GD: What would you tell someone about you to draw them in to see your thread about yourself? NG: People, come and visit my thread. You will see interesting photographs of nature and something unique on Plaza (as far as I know) - silk painting. If you like what you see I can give you some tips about how to start painting yourself.

Newbie Perspective

When I stumbled upon the plaza I had no clue what it was. Truthfully it was quite by accident. I was certainly intimidated by the immense size and sheer amount of forums the plaza had to offer, but after about a week I could navigate around with no problem. I knew what I wanted to be at once, an elf of Imladris. Now the plaza has been a truly unique experience and I have been involved in it almost every day since. From Isengard to Imladris, from Basic Lore to Advanced Lore, I have truly found someplace that I can have fun with Tolkien fans! (who are all very nice by the way) This has been some of the best times I have ever had and this is most definitely a place I fit in.

Oldbie Perspective

I joined the Plaza October 10, 2003, after having been told about this page from a friend, with name Himlithion. For quite a long time now, have I been a member of the Plaza, and when I first registered, I joined the kingdom of Minas Tirith. I remember I could never imagine myself as anything else than a man, a human. Men were described as proud, and I could relate to exactly that, among other things of course.

I never became active in Minas Tirith though, and in my days as a Gondorian I roamed the lore and movie forums. Then one day Lórien was opened, and my friend Himlithion joined. So I decided to pull his leg; in secret I changed kingdom to Lórien and changed name to Celebglîn, to see what he’d say. And so began my days as an Elf.

I loved Lórien from the day I joined, and I love it today. I tried to participate in as many activities as possible, be it the Guard, the Drill Team, Racing Team or riddle thread! I tried to get around as much as possible and meet new people, and indeed have I gotten many friends during my time as a Galadhrim. I remained in Lórien for two years, before I felt I needed a change and left for Fangorn to become an Ent. But being an Ent was not my fate.

I returned to Lórien, and soon I tried to leave the Plaza as whole. Yes, tried, for I did indeed fail. And not only have I failed once, but twice! After this I came to the conclusion that it was not my time to go, and I hope to this day, that my time to go will be far off into the future.

Staying in Lórien for yet another year, I once more decided to do a kingdom change. I had in fact decided already where I wanted to go; Imladris. Yet, I thought it would be fun to give people a chance of deciding which kingdom I should join, and therefore I opened a poll in OoME. We all know that the strength of the Orcs have been in their numbers, and this was no exception! I ended up in Mordor, and I figured I’d give it a shot. I lasted only one(!) day though. So here I am!

I was welcomed with open arms by everyone in Rivvy, which made me feel great. There is an aura of warmth over the House of Elrond and everyone who dwells there, so no matter where you are - you feel loved! So far I love it in Rivvy, even though I am not a part of as many activities as I once was in Lórien.

But the Plaza is not about that, being part of as many activities. No, the Plaza is about having fun, making new friends and escape RL for a bit. And that is why I am still active! But even though I enjoy and treasure my days on the Plaza still, every each one of them - the days as a newbie when everything was new and exciting will remain the best time of my Plaza “career”. I envy every new member I see, for they have a great time ahead of them.

What happened in ME this month

Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow in Middle Earth

Be prepared, gentle readers, for Imladris has been invaded by a large group of Lothlorien refugee's armed only with their bravery and their hopes for a new and better life. Though they have lingering love for the Golden Woods, the time had come for them to explore new chapters and new challenges.

Being one of the 'newly relocated', I must extend a hearty thank you and Hannon le to those that have made this difficult transition easier. Rilómë (Master Elrond), Tinindil, Janowyn and so many others, you are all so wonderful and there is no way to repay such considerations. We know that in Rivendell, we will find peace and comfort and our hearts can heal. Soon, you won’t know who was who and from where and all that will be left is friendship and a profound sense of family.

Speaking of family, my dear Elsen and Elsen family friends, now is not a time to carry old hurts and grudges, now is the time to celebrate and lean on each other for support. We are now home. Let's enjoy ourselves!

Tidings from Abroad

Lorien Report

LorienWelcome to the Golden Woods

I am going to attempt to update you in the goings on in Lothlórien.  So sit tight and bear with us. There is more going on in Lórien at the moment than can ever be seen on the surface.  As with any thriving Kingdom there are always changes coming into play and new things happening.

This month though Lorien has had more than normal.  The sad thing is that a lot of it I cannot speak of yet.  Those who make their home in the Mallorns might know of what I speak, but most will be as unknowing as the rest.  Be assured that you will see many things that have not been for years and a few things that have not been seen before.  Spring is upon us and the Galadhrim are taking the season of birth and life to heart.

The things that we all know and love are of course growing and are as popular as ever.  The Hollow and The Gardens are filled with the sounds of joy and happiness, as they ever were, as all races join together. The Art Guild has been unburied and is in the process of being rebuilt,
something which is taking the participants a while to complete, but it will be up and running again soon.

Even more trainees have joined the ranks of the Galadhrim, and people have come and gone this month. There have been many smiles and tears, but the woods live on as they always will.

Minas Tirith Report

Minas Tirith Suil , Elves of Imladris, mellyn of Minas Tirith ! Once again I am proud to bring you report of my land. This month saw a few promotions in the City of Kings; Finduilas Faeliverin stepped down from her command of the Rangers and the well-known and admired leader Arnyn Dealedwen was promoted to head the Elite Ranger Corps in her stead. Arnyn’s Second in Commmand was chosen as well, the capable and devoted Ann Kalagon of Division Hyandaner of which Arnyn belongs as well. Pele Alarion, a respected and faithful Hyandaner corporal in the ERC, whose hard work and dedication within the Houses of Healing of Minas Tirith has not gone without notice, has been rewarded with the position of Royal Master Healer. The Hyandaners of the ERC are very proud of their comrades and leaders. Spring itself brings surprises and change, for Minas Tirith, surprise and change showed itself in the form of the Aragorn and Faramir ruler icons of Jevesh and Finduilas ! The new Aragorn icon depicts the Heir of Isildur raising his blade to an unseen Orc host, ready to attack and defend; the Faramir icon depicts the Steward in a noble and attentive pose.

The latest complete Ranger RPG – The Reserves Part I : What the Blind One Sees - in Minas Tirith was enjoyable to those Ranger Reservists who took part. In What the Blind One Sees, Ranger Reservists had to journey to the Gondorian town of Hyapende to meet a blind Seer named Llirri who wished to proclaim the coming of the king in Minas Tirith after the brief time of the high royal’ absence. The Rangers’ mission was to take her to the City of Kings unharmed; they journeyed by ship to collect her at town had difficulties with the town administration over the guarding and taking of the Seer; no one in Hyapende liked Llirri and believed her a witch. No one wanted her protected and of course taken back to the mother city of the land of Gondor. The Ranger Reservists took Lliiri regardless and found themselves attacked again and again along the way home. After the escape of the fiery destruction of their ship at the doings of treacherous sailors, they found themselves engaged in battle once more and this writer and his fellow Reservist Aeryn were entrusted with the care of Lliiri and her strong, mute protector named Jorgan; Aeryn and this writer took the Seer and her guardian to Minas Tirith whilst Corporal Pele Alarion and the group of Reservists fought alongside Tia Galanodel and her Muinamacari Rangers who had been on patrol in the defeating of the foe who had engaged them.

Another Ranger RPG – Harnen Mouth - for those who have achieved full inclusion into the ERC and also those of the rank of Page and Squire has just been opened by Division Roquen officer Rochir Mumakdacil and already has seen quite a bit of action. For those visiting the kingdom, drop by the Marching Mumak Pub and the Tavern of the Seven Stars for fun, socializing, and good eating ! I look forward to updating you on Gondorian news next issue, elven friends; till then, namarie and take care !

Rohan Report

Riddermark Suilad mellyn nín, Wesðu hal! from the lands of the Horse Lords. Spring is surely upon us now, the bright colors of the flowers all in full bloom, the sweet smell of pine, roses on the air. So many things going on within Rohan this month that I find myself bright eyed and how does one say, 'bushy tailed' with being able to bring this news to you. Firstly, Eleowyn and Aodh finally tied the knot, their wedding a premier one, elegant you could say, the Lord Eomer and Lady Eowyn both came and gave their blessings to the lovely couple. Much partying and dancing afterwards, the Cavalry having also came, the carriage outside now only awaits to take them into a new world as man and wife. Many guests were there, the Cavalry having dressed in their finest, would be giving them a proper military celebration unseen like no other. Further news, with all the Spring Festivities afoot, I'll give you a brief rundown on what’s going on.

One of the events going on is the Tub Race. You and a teammate journey down the Snowbourn river in a tub of course, your adventure taking you through many twists and turns. This with many miles to travel, it's hoped your craft, tub is well built. Competitors are welcome to come and watch as they will soon be reaching the last leg of the race.
You then have the Springtime Dance Jamboree taking place in an outdoor setting. Flowers were given out to each man and woman upon entering and those later in the evening who had the same flowers, a couple if you will, they would be dancing first. Rafting, swimming, a huge buffet, games and much more are still as I write this, going on. The first dance has just occurred so come on in, have some fun and get yourself some food in the evening moonlight. Open to all races, Calena and Moi' having run this event, I can tell you I've not had so much fun in quite awhile. Please join us.

Other festivities ongoing are, the Spring Badger Chase, of which is self explanatory, the Tame Your Horsey, which is somewhat like a rodeo style event. Then an Archery competition as well as A Dwarf Tossing event which surely seems to be fun as I couldn't help but laugh at some of the antics from the many involved.

With the news from the Cavalry of new Insignia's, all gathering around to pick theirs up and stitch them on, the lady responsible for her dedication and hard work, Celinawyn , much thanks were given with these most beautiful additions. Many new Riders are joining our Elite Cavalry daily, taking the oath, training, and becoming one of Rohan's finest.

The Cavalry Patrols are set up once again, to safeguard our lands, keep all those who
would do us harm out, and those who live here safe from all treachery. So if you are a visitor and you see those in uniform, let them know you are glad they are there protecting you.

We've had two new Pæthfindian's passing their tests, Isolde Allarion and Ciarda Beorhtlig. Inducted with honors to say the least. Both of the Meduseld Eored's, they shall make the Cavalry proud, of that I'm quite sure.

And in closing this months report, remember to always write your favorite rider, come visit the new shops in the Riddermarket, and lastly, enjoy yourselves here in the great land of the Horse Lords. May the wind always be at your backs, the calm seas beneath your feet.

This is Goldmoon Dunami saying until we meet again, Namarie.

Lore: Finarfin

Finarfin was the youngest child of Finwe, first High King of Noldor, and his second wife Indis; born in the time of the Two Trees of Valinor. He had a brother, Fingolfin, and two sisters: Findis and Iríme, and also a half-brother, Feanor, renowned for making the Silmarils. His Quenya name was Arafinwe, given to him by his father, which meant ''noble (son) of Finwe'', Finarfin is his name in Sindarin.

He had golden hair, after his mother, who was of Vanyar kin, and often was his house referred to as the golden one, a unique mark among Noldor, who were all dark haired. About two thousand years before Sun and Moon, Finarfin took to wife Earwen, daughter of Olwe, King of the Teleri in Aman and brother of Elwe Singollo. Earwen bore four children into the world: Findrod, Aegnor, Angrod and Galadriel.

A century later, Melkor destroyed the Two Trees with great help from Ungoliant, put Finwe to death and stole the Silmarils, fleeing back to darkness. When Feanor learned of this, he spoke harsh words addressed to the Valar, wanting to take elves out of Aman back to Middle-earth, Finarfin, along with his brother Fingolfin, was opposed; advising elves to think properly of their actions. But eventually they did follow Feanor, because of their own children, who wanted to go, but they were the last to march with their people. Finarfin did not have anything to do with the Kinslaying in Alqualonde, and he was ashamed and grieved because of that. And that's why he returned to Valinor, after Mandos spoke Prophecy of the Noldor, gained forgivness of the Valar, and became the High King of the Noldor in Aman.

Crafts

Learning What a Craft Is.

Some might say that crafts are useless ways to kill one’s time. However a craft can be more than simple trinkets made to decorate ones home. Crafts can be anything from beautiful handkerchiefs embroidered with the emblems of houses to swords and ships. This is because craft is a broad term.

A craft is a skill that requires time to hone and dexterity and patience to learn. This means that whether a person is making a doll, a handkerchief or a swan ship it takes effort and dedication to create the item of their craft. Every person can learn any craft, however there are very few people that could learn to make a ship from a single lesson which is why quite often crafts are handed off as small trinket because these are easier to learn.

This is also the reason why smaller items are often seen in papers as it is very hard for others to learn the larger more intricate crafts, though the decorative or fun ones are easy to learn. Because often the larger crafts take time to learn and require the crafter to have the right touch.

Riddles

Two separate riddles (one in each column) whose answers together provide the clue to the overall answer

My fifth is in family, foreign and fight Our first is in family, foreign, and fight
My second is also in foreign, not night Our sixth is also in foreign and bright
But the start of the night is my fourth (and not yours) Our fourth is in new and in cold winter snow
While the green growing grass brings my last to the fore   And the silver, sweet springtime our last clearly shows
My third is your sixth, for fair father declared Our third is your second; my mother decreed
That he (bright sun) would my sixth last proudly wear Our second should be in a plant, not its seed
At last my first; your mother rightly did say And fifth feels neglected, yet tender its care
That the first of middling hours should stay For without our fifth, half the word would despair
I may seem quite different from you, it is true I have many distinctions; am brazen or shy
I may seem quite different from you, it is true But when you are my only midwife, what am I?

April Fools was a Month ago...

Well it seems Lori was quite right about switching to Arwen as her new icon. Perhaps it wasn’t quite as mumps like as the one that she picked out, but when the little elfie saw it the first thing that snapped into my mind was Arwen floating about all fey like before Frodo the half wraith. The floaty hair… the disturbingly vague expression in the eyes… the suction-cup lips. It was horrifying to say the least when this conclusion was reached. Needless to say Glorfindel has gone missing and a new (slightly) more masculine Arwen has somehow brainwashed us all into thinking she’s the Golden Lord. Someone…. find the serial number on Asfaloth, for that way there’s a way for the FWAT team to track her when she steals him to try to escape from the real Glorfindel’s wrath. Whenever he deigns to wake up.

Editor’s note – Additional information received from FWAT HQ
Sheesh already! We’re on it Elda – no sweat!
