The River Bruinen

Bruinen, or (appropriately) Loudwater, runs smoothly through the Valley of Imladris. It finds it's source in the Misty Mountains, east of the Valley. About a day's travel from Rivendell are the Fords of Bruinen, which one must pass when approaching Rivendell from the west. At a point, the Bruinen and the Mitheithel (or Hoarwell) join and form the river Gwathló, which discharges into Belegaer. The River (and it's Ford) were under the control of Elrond, who could block the Ford if he had great need to do so.
