The Last Homely House

The House of Elrond in Rivendell is a large house with two stories rising above the valley floor, on top of which stands the Belfry. The house is immense and rectangular in shape. It is difficult to gauge the size of the dwelling from the outside, beyond that it is large; at times the house may appear to be larger and smaller at other times. The house is built with a deep red brick that covers each side of the house till it reaches the roof. On the front of the house are hung two double doors that function as the primary entrance. The doors are fashioned from oak and decorated by minute, intricate carvings made by the most skilled Elves of Rivendell wood craftsmanship. On either side of the door are two lamps drilled into the brick wall that may be lit with fire in times of darkness. Such is the design of the crystal glass that light is thrown for a great distance when the lamps are lit. On the east side of the house is a porch that runs the entire length of the building. It also is fashioned from oak and boasts a protective covering that offers shelter from the elements. Several doors open onto this porch. Windows are placed frequently in the building, allowing large amounts of light to stream into the house. These windows are bordered by oak shutters that lay flat against the brick when opened. The glass area for many of the windows is large, avoiding multiple panes and using large sheets of glass set in beautiful window sills. The first and second floors are layered one on top of the other and then the roof hangs about six inches beyond the walls. Gutters run along the lengths and widths of the house to catch water and carry it off. The gutters are a thin, white stone that hang lightly under the eaves. The eaves are fashioned in such a way to pull the water under them and into the gutters. The roof is covered with wood tiles stained a dark color that compliments the shade of the brick and wood of the house. In the center of the roof the red brick reappears as a third story, the Belfry jutted into the air. The Belfry is substantially smaller than the rest of the house with a large window in each of its four sides. The roof is completed on the top of the Belfry where the four sides come together in a single point. The roof tile, shutters and brick of this level match the rest of the house. In three areas along the roof, massive chimneys thrust out above the house and roof. These chimneys share many individual fireplaces, explaining their size. The third level and the chimneys are the visible parts of Elrond’s House above the surrounding trees.
