A Questions & Answers Session in Rivendell
All elves and visitors in Rivendell come gather in the Hall of fire where we have a guest from Lorien. Rumil, a.k.a. the actor Jorn Benzon, is here to answer questions about the three films, all of which he has worked on in many different roles, not just the one as Rumil. Below is the transcript of all the questions which were asked.
Q: Jorn, Do you get recognized by fans of Rumil when you are doing normal stuff, or did you have too much make-up on for people to realize who you are?
A:LOL....no, not here in NZ , not even the main cast would get recognized that often here , and even if the did , it would be just like , ' oh, there goes so-and-so , no screaming fans here , yay , go New Zealand !! he he ......... (p.s. - if you dont know what i looklike in real life (he he ) use this link ..... http://www.hellbelle.com/rumil/rumilpicsjorn.htm
Q: what kind of food did they serve? (Enquiring hobbits want to know)
A: Well, there was all sorts of food, good food, name it we had it I think , lol.
Q: You said name it and they probably had it... so my question is, did they ever serve yall Haggis? How bout Mexican food (I'm from Texas...)? Also, what is your worst bad habit?
A: No, no haggis, and yes, we did have mexican every now and then .......... my worst bad habbit .....hmmmm.....hell, ....I dont know
Q: With hobbits, elves, men, orcs, wizards, dwarves, and wraiths all over the set, did you find it hard to keep concentrated without just slipping into a Tolkien-induced daydream?.....Also- Were you in the scene with the Counsil of Elrond?,....Did you get to keep any special momentos from filming?
A: LOL......Tolkien induced daydream ......nah, too many ,'non-tolkien' people areond .....LOL,.......No, I wasn't at the council ???........and once again 'NO' ..... I didn't keep any mementos , it would mean instant dismisal and prosecution !!!!!!
Q: How much were cast members expected to know of the original writings of Tolkien - if any at all? Was there a general "order" to read the books, or did PJ simply describe what he wanted based on the trilogy?
A: Well , I know some of the actors didnt know the story. but they soon had to learn it. I would always see the cast walking around with a beaten up copy of the book(s). I do know that Christopher Lee has been reading the 'lotr' every year without fail since it was published.
Q: How did it feel being able to participate in the re-enactment of one of the greatest stories ever writtin?
Q: Are you a fan of Tolkien's works?
A: Ok, I'm going to answer these two in one, ...I am a Fan of Tolkien, I'm a fan of fantasy, and I was an 'Elf' fan way before the film was even thought about, and that is why I feel very priviliged and honored to have been part of these films .And to have been able to portray 'Rumil'. and 'Rumil' has now become a part of me. ;)
Q: Which role did you like playing the most? Why?
A: LOL.....this one is easy ....'RUMIL' ...!!!! Why ...... well its RUMIL !!!!....lol
Q: What do you consider to be your most difficult role of any of the three movies? What made it more difficult than the others, and did the difficulty correspond with your enjoyment of the role?
A: OK .....Well the most difficult role to play were the nights at helms as an urk-hai,those were hard nights, the costomes were big and bulky, with a mask you could hardly see out off, and standing outside the wall all night in a cold southerly under a rain tower .....ak
But it was also the best , Helms Deep was great , thats where we worked on the one set for 4 months ,made alot of friends there who also became longtime extras, so it was a great little social group :), my first day on set was helms deep as an dead fighting elf, had to lie on the wall while stunts were carried out around me.
Q: Which cast member was it most fun/easiest to work with? Whose personality most closely matched that of their character?
A: Hmmm...... I would have to say Vigo Mortensen, he basicly became aragon.
Funniest would have to be a split between John rhys Davis and bernard Hill
Q: What skills did you have to learn for your roles? (ex: sword fighting, horseback riding, archery, etc.
A: Yes well, I didnt get to do much sword fighting , only in a few sceens , most of that was left up to the stunt people . We did learn some archery (i have done it before so i was lucky), but it mainly involved , being able to pull arrows out of quivers and how 'not' to notch an arrow (for safety reasons , ofcourse), but the one thing that was practiced over and over again was marching , wow , sometimes it took a while to get it right (some people had no sense of rythm)
Q: Were you in the battle of helms deep? (if you were where can i find a shirt that says 'i survived helms deep'? lol) and on average how many days did you spend on filming?
A: Yes as I said above I was at helms deep, I am actualy rohan, elf and urk-hai in that battle ....lol.....as for a t-shirt, I have one and I might sell it to you if you offer me enough money ...LOL
How many days on average ?........ummm....hard to say realy depending what was being filmed and on what set , some weeks i would only work one or two days, and helms deep some weeks it would be a 6 day week(of nights)
Q: By far, who was the nicest person you encountered while on the set of FotR, TTT, RotK? Wow this is soo cool, lol
A: Hmmm....hard to answer , everybody was nice, actors, casting, make-up, people, weta people (props), wardrobe people, ......etc, everybody was nice, the reson why I've become hooked on the industry !!
Q: What was it like to work with Peter Jackson?
A: WOW ....what else can I say. He's cool, so real and down to earth. I mean it was such a pleasure to be able to help him bring to life this epic tale. And I thank him from the bottom of my heart for giving me the opertunity, (even though he wont see this , and probably dosnt know or remember me, and had nothing to do with casting me ...lol)
Q: Who out of the whole cast do you think acted the best? (besides yourself, lol)
A: LOL...I didn't act I just stood there ....LOL
Ummmm....I think every main cast person did and has done a great job bringing these characters to life ....... the person i looked at with awe though was Cristopher Lee ....a true legend . will never forget the speach he made at the end of his last day filming ( i was very lucky to be there)
Q: What was the armour you had to wear like? For Rohan, Uruk-hai, and Elvish, was it like heavy or light, made of acctual metal?
A: Well the armour was very different , urk-hai must have been the worst, but in a strnge way more comfortable (lots of padding).it could get very heavy though.
The rohan armour was not too bad , unlees you were wearing chain-mail armour, even though it was mainly coated plastic it was still heavy , ( armour was classified into catagories, hero-armour meant the best and the real stuff), so yes hero armour for the people getting featured was mainly real.
Fighting elf armour : Prolouge- the prolouge armour was not too bad to wear, but was a bit difficult to wear as ther was a long robe involved (dress....LOL)
Helm deep fighting elf armour - I wore this alot, and it was very tight, and not much to it realy , very easy to get cold in it .
Gondorian armour- was not that bad either, could get a bit anoying with the neck plate .
Q: Were you given any "souvenirs" or allowed to keep any props from the movies?
A: No ...absolutly not .the only souvenirs I got were, t-shirt's for cast and crew
This may not be good to say here ....but I will,..... I did some work for the wardrobe department for a few weeks, (after all the main shooting was done), and I had to destroy (with a big hammer, rings and jewelry....that was not fun........ was I tempted to take any .....yes, ofcourse , but no way in hell I would do that, I wouldn't feel good and it would have jepodised me getting any more work. (cos I need more work, anybody ??...LOL)
Q: How did all the guy's take to the long blonde hair? do you think it is a style for the future .
A: No, .....well certainly not me
Q: I've read things on the Internet and elsewhere that state that many of the actors actually made their own armor and repaired it when it was damaged. Were you witness to any of this, or do this?
A: Hmm....well as far as i know only Vogo Mortensen did anything like that.
Q: what was your favourite part, favourite person and favourite member of cast also can tell me what legolas was like to be with(during bow sceens)
A: Ummm...well I think I already have answered the first two parts of that question in previous posts ..... as for 'Orlando' ....he was just a regular guy there to do a job , basically all I can say.
Q: Had you been schooled in the books before you gained your role? what was it like for you backstage, was it truly as hard as they say or was it a pure enjoyment to work backstage. And have you performed in any other productions/films?
Q: I hope I'm not being too personal, but I was just wondering if you've worked on any other films since LotR.
A: part of the first question has already been answerd above, im not sure what you mean 'backstage', do you mean waiting backstage to be called on to set , or do you mean all the behind the sceens workers ??....who in my book all deserve a medal !!.....everybody worked extreemly long and hard hours , but it was a joy for all im sure to bring this wonderful tale to life .
And yes I have been on other productions , nothing major , no speaking parts , just features in a few drama's, comecials and short films, I have also worked production and 3rd assistant director on a music video .
Q: How exactly did you get the part oif Rumil? How did you hear about the auditions? Were you surprised? Were you recommended?
A: Well I just started out as everybody else ....as an extra, first day was helms deep , the night of 14th jan 2000....so I had done alot of work for them before I did 'Rumil' , which was shot around the end of june 2001., so i guess casting thought i would be good ??........ and yes I was kinda supprised i got it , seeing i thought i already had had my feature shot as an courtier to 'Denethor'...... maybe i still do ???.....we will have to wait and see ....he he he
Q: I've heard the actors of LOTR trilogy say that they've never worked on any movie this "huge" with so much involved I mean, as in cast, crew, props etc..... would you say the same?
A: Well its the first thing ive ever worked on (apart from an advert I did when I was 17 years old)......so ya it is the biggest thing ive ever worked on
Q: Did you manage to injure yourself while filming? If so, how? And did you make friends with (or at least meet) any members of the main cast?
A: Yes ....I did injure myself, twice while filming the prologue sceens up at MT. Ruapehu , it was very rocky up there , and running up there was hard , twisted my ankle, nothing major...but a day or two later we were praticing some sword movements and i got hit in between my shoulder blade, my whole hand and arm went numb , apparently it had it a nerve
And I had my toes stood on by a horse when I was a stable boy leading horses at 'meduseld'....... that really hurt.
Yes ....I got to meet the main cast, I wouldnt say friends, BUT........ my brother did though , thats how I met most of them , yes ..... my brother also worked on the films, its a good way to be noticed
Q: Was there anyone else who was a proffesional extra like yourself? If so, who were they?
A: Yes ....there certainly were, like I've said, my brother worked on it aswell ( he is actualy 'Legolas' cast double )......and my room-mate was on set as an urk-hai on the VERY first day of filming, (aptly named 'hell thursday'), and I met him on set, so you guess he's an 'Pro-extra' ...LOL (and many others who just wanted to be a part of it all)
Q: Ooh, 'tis exciting! Would you be involved in the reshoot (if any) for ROTK?
A: Yes, I have been involved in all the reshoots (pick-up's).....and im waiting for 'ROTK' to start very soon .......(which i hear will be in a few weeks )
Q: As a Tolkien fan, do you think that the movies are doing the books justice as far as the storyline goes?! (I have some issues with the gift giving scene in Lorien,..where's the dirt?! It leads me to believe that the Scouring of the Shire will not be included in ROTK..
A: Well...... it is very hard to put a book to film, you cant have it all, and you cant please everybody at once (film studios, fans producers....etc) .....sorry but it's the awful truth ....... I love the extended version of the first film and I can't wait for the extended version of 'TTT' to come out
Q: Are there any scenes that were cut from the book for the film adaptation that you would have liked to have been included in the film?
A: yes ....just about all of it ...he he he , but you cant please everybody .
Q: Did you meet Christopher Lee? He's a bit of a hero of mine. I bet it was intimidating working with such esteemed actrors such as him, John & Ian
A: Yes, I met Christopher Lee, and no, no actor is intimidating!!, well I don't think so, they are just people doing a job.
Q: I read somewhere that Sean Bean and all the others of the fellowship got tattoos that signified their part in the film.
Did any other actors get Tolkien or Middle Earth tattoos and if so what was the favorite one to have and on what part of your body ?
A: Yes they did, as far as I know they had 'nine" tattoo'ed......and yes I did get a tattoo about 2 months ago, I couldn't help myself....... after months of searching and asking people I finaly got hold of the correct way to spell 'Rumil' in Sindarin
Q: *sits and stares* A real actor *gives a little scream and dance then calms self*
I'm really interested in acting. I'm going to try to attend a major acting school and am continually active in our school's theatre department. I would like to know however, how do u audition for stunt doubles and extras, or even learn about any sort of audition? Do you enjoy acting? Are there any movies or plays you most enjoyed ever being in if you have before? And do you prefer stage acting or movie acting if you have done both.
A: How did I audition ...... just went along to one of their mass auditions like everybody else ....and got in !? .... I do enjoy acting, (when I get it), I did some stage plays when I was in school, I don't think I'm a stage person, more comfortable with film and tv. And I think the 'LOTR' trilogy is and will always be my fav.
