Advice from an Old Huorness
Role Playing Tips by Oak Leaf

Of any Kingdom on the Plaza, Fangorn has the races that are the most unusual to Role Play There are a few options to examine.

Types of Characters You can Role Play In Fangorn

The Plaza Ent - This type is by far is the most popular with anyone who joins Fangorn. This is partly due to the recent LotR films. It is also a personal favorite with me. I like trees and anything that looks like them. People think ‘Ent’ they think ‘Tree’. This option allows for considerable creativity. You choose your favorite shade tree and base your character on that. Additionally Entwives can also look like Fruiting or Flowering trees since they cared for gardens, flowering and fruiting trees. As far as appearance goes your imagination is the limit. The appearance of this kind of Ent is varied. As Ents are beings that occur in male and female forms common sense dictates that the Entwives would be the ones that would fruit and bear the seedlings. However, sometimes playing a ‘Tree Thing’ isn’t for everyone. So there is another option.

The Cannon Ent - The type as designed by Tolkien in the books. This is put here for you purists out there. This Ent is approximately 12 to 16 feet tall and has gray green moss-like hair and beard. He has a bark-like covering over his torso and legs. It is debatable as to weather this is his skin or some kind of clothing. The posture, build and bark of these Ents tend to suggest different kinds of trees. Foliage and branches are not seen on these Ents unless that are in a dormant sleeping state. This type of character can be RP’ed with human-like attributes. You have to option of making this character quite human if you so choose. Some who join Fangorn can’t quite stomach being a ‘tree’. So this is a possibility to examine.

Huorns- This is a option for those who want to play a character with a mischievous streak. Usually very tree-like in appearance, they may or may not be of Entish origins. Sometimes a Huorn is a Tree that has become Entish. Sometime someone wants to just play their favorite tree. This is a option for those people. You can also just call yourself you favorite tree and not even use the term ‘Huorn’. Some people find the word spooky.

A word of advice of playing any tree-like being or Ent. Sometimes there is the temptation to god mode in an RPG setting. Ents and Huorns are naturally big. Just don’t make them too big!

Other Fangorn Options - Do you have to be an Ent or Huorn to Join Fangorn? The Answer is No. There are many other options available to you as a Fangorn resident. Why not RP a Thrush, a Bear, a Deer. You could RP one of the Great Eagles. Why not be a Beorning? Just about anything Tolkien that lives in the forest goes.

The bottom line is that Fangorn is a kingdom that allows you to be just you, be it, mossy, or leafy, Mannish, or Tree-ish, Entish or Huornish or even something entirely different.
