An Introduction to Today's Ents
By Tolkien's definition, an Ent is a tree shepherd, but little is said of their physiology. This article hopes to remove some of the mystery.
There is a reason for the Ents' treelike appearance and wooden body. An Ent is more than a tree with a brain. Like a plant, an Ent is photosynthetic. He can survive without a single bite to eat because his feet have roots on them that drink from the soil. The Ent also has sort of a circulatory system, and muscles which permit movement. Ents also eat in limited amounts, usually in the form of draughts or fruit and other forms of plantlife.*
In today's Fangorn at the Plaza, Ents exist in male and female forms. How they got the Entwives back is a matter of conjecture at this point. Ents are easily recognized by their beards and their tall stature. Entwives are somewhat smaller with a lot of branch and foliage growth. This is only a basic description, since Ents are very individual in their appearance. They can look like just about any kind of tree imaginable.
Being members of the plant kingdom, Ents reproduce in a plant like manner-by seed. Seeds or fruit are borne by Entwives. If you see an Ent with fruit or seeds on it, it is sure to be an Entwife. Very few of the seeds actually contain a seedling. These stay on the mother until ready to sprout. The rest become a feast for birds, squizzels and even other Ents. Entmaidens do not fruit.
I am happy to report that today's Fangorn has over 800 Ents. Their numbers are increasing weekly. Fangorn was reestablished a year ago and is enjoying growth.
*All of the plantlife that is eaten is not cannabalism, but it instead merely useing the final gift of an Olvar to sustain yourself - Ents only take such fruits as fall upon the ground (i.e. windfalls etc.) and even when they cultivate flora and fauna, it's not cultivated for food, but for it's integral beauty.
