Ok so I guess I shall start this thread off with a picture of me going shopping. Yes those bags are mine, and no I was not actually supposed to shop. Just go with a friend. Why is it you find amazing stuff when you are supposed to be saving?  LOL

Group 1 -Hi everyone. I know we should all be coordinating in some way to answer the task but at the moment I am not up to it. I have 3 university exams in the next two weeks but as of September 10th I can commit fully to the task. I hope it is not a problem.

...I feel a yearning to own them! But looking at that site, I also see several other three-volume, one-volume, and seven-volume LotRs that are captivating as well, if only my wallet could afford them. geordie, what have you done?

..but seriously - collecting Tolkien has been my hobby for many years, and the books were much cheaper when I started out. I wouldn't be able to afford the prices now. It's a shame that speculators, seeing the rise in popularity in Tolkien (as they saw it) when the movies hoo-ha was at its peak, drove prices up way above reasonable levels.

Prices have come down since, but I think that the reason why they remain out of reach of most folk (including me) is that the dealers paid over the odds at the peak, and now can't sell without incurring a loss. Serves 'em right; but it's we enthusiasts who suffer.   

sorry - off-topic there. But it's worth looking out for nice early sets on Ebay (and abe.books, though you won't find a bargain there). There's nothing quite like the look (and feel, and _smell_) of a nice fresh LotR from the 50s or 60s.
