There is a world outside the plaza - and in fact, that’s where most of Elvish takes place. So - let’s bring some of it in!

This thread is for interesting bits of news from the outside world - please share interesting discoveries from other websites!

Thread do and don’ts:

Please do:

* keep an eye on what’s going on on ELFling, Lambengolmor, Ardalambion and so on and post the results of interesting discussions, errata and so on

* make sure that links to sites you’re posting lead to sites which have a serious discussion based on Tolkien’s Elvish - the tell-tale are usually references (like VT42:11) which reveal to people where to find the information in Tolkien’s works.

* keep us informed about new publications of Vinyar Tengwar, Parma Eldalamberon and such like and what to find in them.

Please don’t:

* add your comments or questions here - people should learn here what’s new, not what you think of it (if necessary, open your own thread for comments and ask questions in the Language Helpdesk)

As of November 27, Christopher Gilson has published issue #16 of Parma Eldalamberon for $30, containing (among other things) drafts of Tolkien’s early Qenya poetry, Qenya declensions and conjugations, and alphabets pre-dating the Tengwar (in the external timeline, anyway).

Tindomul, I assume you're talking about Elvish as She is Spoke? It's a PDF file, and attempting to read it in something like Microsoft Word will appear as gibberish. Do you have Adobe Reader or any other program for reading PDF files? Adobe Reader is available for free, legal download here.

I've forgotten to update this thread as of March! Since then (out of chronological order):

Thorsten Renk has written an article on Vanyarin Quenya on his site Parma Tyelpelassiva.

Thorsten Renk has written an article on Agental suffixes and gender distinction in the Qenya Lexicon on his site (see above).

Omentielva Tatya
is coming up in August, and is therefore still calling for papers.

Thorsten Renk (with the help of others) has been continuing discussions about the neo-Elvish dialogue from the movies on the Elfling discussion list.

The Collected Vinyar Tengwar Vol. 1 is now available (see Lambengolmor and VT Web Shop).

Roman Rausch has written an article analyzing the Elvish names from volumes 6, 7, and 8 of HoME. See Lambengolmor and article on his site Sindanórië.

Carl Hostetter has proclaimed in Lambengolmor 1001 that he plans to publish Vinyar Tengwar 49 at the end of May. Members of ELF should check their subscriptions to see when they run out, as those whose subscriptions ran out with issue 48 will only have about 2 weeks in order to order the single issue.

It will contain the third part of Patrick Wynne's Eldarin Hands, Fingers, & Numerals, and (more excitingly) an appendix on the verb "to be", five volitive phrases using nai, and the inflections of Q. pronominal suffixes from the 1960s!! beam

Helge Fauskanger has uploaded two of B.J. Ward's essays on Quenya Pronouns and Derivation in Khuzdul to his site (Ardalambion). And, totally unexpected, Helge says that Bill Welden handed out copies of PE17 (not even announced yet!) at the latest Omentielva, containing "200+ pages of post-LotR information ... [and] Tolkien's own comments on the various samples of "exotic" languages in the LotR", including some new information about Khuzdul. See Elfling #34301!

Eluchil on the Minas Tirith forums quotes Bertrand Bellet as to what is contained in PE17 here. It looks like this issue will be a definite necessity!

Partial synopsis:

Parma Eldalamberon 17, "Words, phrases & passages in various tongues in The Lord of the Rings", 220 pages
  • etymologies of a lot of names appearing in LotR (end of 60s). For instance, Asfaloth "sunlit foam", lebethron definitely linked to "five", Aragorn "Revered king".
  • "some" more on omentielmo / omentielvo and vanimalda / vanimelda.
  • comparative in Eldarin speeches
  • personal and possessive in Quenya
  • Sindarin conjugations for the two verbal classes
  • a chart of Sindarin possessive suffixes
  • some stuff on Sindarin mutation
  • some stuff on plural (class-plural or "normal" plural)
  • adverbial formation
  • lexical derivation
  • conjugations, e.a. (present) of -a Quenya verbs
  • analysis of Black Speech and Khuzdul sentences in LotR
  • some new roots and stems, with their derivatives
Also, paraphrasing Helge Fauskanger's tidbits here and here, we can add:
  • some new information about Khuzdul and the Black Speech
  • samples and phrases in LotR analyzed word-by-word by Tolkien himself
  • bits of general non-linguistic lore, for example on the manifestations of the Ainur, or Sauron's original name
Hopefully it will be available to buy soon! It looks like this issue could change neo-Sindarin usage just as VT49 did for neo-Quenya. beam

Well, Taurëllo, not the whole Quenya grammar, but certainly a good chunk of it. And it looks like the new Parma Eldalamberon will make other changes necessary as well. The course that I would have previously recommended is Thorsten Renk's Quetin i lambe eldaiva, but as it's very long I can imagine that any updates to it will take him a while. He's been updating and incorporating new information into a few of his articles already, though, like his Quenya Past Tense one.

So at the moment I don't exactly think there's an up-to-date complete course. Genius Though if I get some more free time (once PE17 arrives and I've read it) I might make a list of things that need to be updated — I had done so already, but before VT49, so my list is a little outdated.

This might be quite off the subject but I have often read that Tolkien got most of his inspiration for elvish from Neolithic Welsh and during his studies at Oxford when he was taking comparitive philology for welsh he was so influenced by the language that he created his own
here is a link describing more in depth what I have breifly discussed http://www.elvish.org/resources.html
hope this helps us all to see the reason for this very interesting little creation of tolkiens .

Tolkien also here discovered "for the the first time the study of a language out of mere love"(Joseph Wright, A Primer of the Gothic Language. Oxford, 1892)

This might also help us to understand the passion that J.R.R. Tolkien had for linguistics and the art of languages which has greatly influenced me and my studies in the modern germanic laguage.

I got PE 18 in just a couple of weeks, much faster than my PE 17 (which I think was also several months, like you). I'm pretty optimistic that they'll be on top of things for this reprint as well (I'll find out, as I've preordered myself a copy).
