~*~ Translation Desk ~*~

You step through an intricately carved arched doorway into the Library of Imladris. Ancient tomes and yellowed parchments are stored with care on shelves that reach to the vaulted ceilings of the long chamber. Special documents are displayed on lecterns. The peaceful hush of the room is occasionally disturbed by the rustling of papers, the faint scratching of quill on parchment, and the sighs of perplexed students seated at the numerous desks.

In the center of the room is a desk bearing a placard labelled "Translation Desk". You are greeted with a welcoming smile.

Greetings! How can we help you?

~ Please post what you would like to have translated.
~ Please state what language you would like to have it in.
~ Transcriptions into Tolkien's invented scripts (tengwar, sarati, cirth, angerthas, etc.) may also be requested, but should go to the Tengwar Tattoo thread also in this forum.
~ Be patient; translators may not be around to respond right away. Using "please" is nice.
~
Please ask for translations here rather than starting new threads.
~ If you would like your name translated, please first look up the meaning of your name at www.behindthename.com and post that meaning here. You will find many names in Quenya here.

Some more experienced Language Forum members are:
Aelindis
Aranhael
Atwe
Elhath

Harlindo
n
Lothenon
Maewen
Tyrhael

This list may change, and some members are more active than others. Some knowledgeable members who have not posted in months have been temporarily removed from the list.

ATTENTION!

Sometimes translations may be overlooked, or not done straight away. We do this in our free time because we have a love of Tolkien’s Languages, and because we enjoy translating. This is not a paid job.  Requests for long translations, such as songs or poems, might not be done.

We recommend that you try simple translations (such as single words or names) for yourself, and then if you’re uncertain, post it here for us to check over. For Sindarin, use Hiswelóke's online wordlists. For Quenya, use Helge Fauskanger’s Wordlists  If it’s not in the dictionaries, either it is not in Tolkien’s Elvish, the word has not yet been published, or the word exists and the dictionaries have not yet been updated to contain the most recent material. If the first two are applicable, please try a synonym or settle for a reconstructed word.

A lot of people ask for phrases that have already been translated! Take a look at Tara’s Sindarin Phrases before asking.

And lastly, to all people learning Elvish, please try to translate the requests here!  We encourage you, for only by translating and making mistakes can you learn!  If you make a mistake, do not fret - one of the more experienced translators will be glad to point it out and explain it to you. But they will often not translate themselves, for they would rather see you try and learn then they do it!

Zuluth: hloima means 'poison, venom' in Quenya. The 'hl' is to be pronounced akin to Welsh ll as in the name of the town Llandudno (i.e. a voiceless l).

Alye voronda ta menuvalye olorelyannar.

That also means poison. For some words Tolkien came up with various alternatives in his life. In this case, both are valid words, you can choose whichever you want (you may treat them as synonyms).

Consequently, I've gone for the title of "The Galadhrim Library."

However, I would be very grateful indeed were someone here able to translate this into Sindarin in the Tengwar transliteration.

Altamaston: Maybe: Parvath Galadhrim,  lit. "All the books of the Galadhrim". parvath is the collective plural of parf, "book". A translation of "of the" is not required, cf. the attested fennas nogothrim, "doorway of the Dwarf-folk" (LotR).
Or you could say  (literally): "Chamber / Hall / Great Hall of Books of the Galadhrim" - Sam / Tham / Thamas Perf Galadhrim.
There may be other options...

Elvina, what you are asking for is not a translation, as the text will remain in English, just a transcription using a different alphabet. The friendly and helpful folks in the Elvish tattoo thread in this forum will do that for you, please repeat your request there.

I went through one of the dictionaries that you provided above. The phrase that I am looking to say is "Knowledge is Power". Ive translated it into " Handë sinen turë"

Is this correct. My roomate and I are going to get tattoos this weekend to celebrate our college graduation and I want to get this right before it is permanently on me. I know it would be asking alot, but I was wondering if you could also write it in elvish for me.

Thanks a milli either way.

Almost... _sinen_ is an adverb meaning 'this way, it is so' rather than the verb 'is'. I would write simply

Hande ná túre.

Note the long vowels.

Dear Sindarin speakers

Hello ,I would like a few lines translated into Sindarin for me, for a fanfiction I am currently writing. They are spoken by Aragorn and Legolas.

‘[in elvish] So, we wait. There are only 500 of us left Aragorn. We will not win this fight if Mithrandir is lost…’

Note: "lost" as in "lost to darkness " rather than geographically lost!

‘[in elvish] Thank you my friend for carrying me thus far. But we ride into darker places yet, Brego, take strength while you can’

‘[in elvish] you are most welcome’

Also I was wondering if someone could confirm "mellon nin" as "my friend"

Thank you

Lol, no.
It's just a line that Aragorn says to Legolas later on in the story. As I've been writing it I've written what I wanted in elvish in english just to keep going with it. I thought I'd put all the lines thus far written up here for translation. There may be some more yet, but I thought that was enough to be starting with!

Anyway, here is what I can come up with.

Page/Apprentice: bŷr 'follower, vassal'
Warrior: maethor 'warrior'
Guardian: tirn 'watcher'
Sentinel: not attested
Leader/Captain/Warden: not attested, but maybe condir 'mayor' literally 'ruling man' can be used
Counsellor/Supervisor
: not attested

Mornaundume:

‘[in elvish] So, we wait. There are only 500 of us left Aragorn. We will not win this fight if Mithrandir is lost…’

OK, one attempt:

Mae, deritham. *Perveneg dír vín darthar, Aragorn. Ú-ortheritham ir Mithrandir gwannen.

literally:

Well, we will wait. Half-thousand men-ours remain, Aragorn. We will not conquer when Mithrandir is lost.

Sorry, as far as I know if-constructions are not attested yet, but I hope this will work in a way.

Atwe - this is the translation desk after all... and you seem to be doing most of the translation help. Since you answered other queries but not Aig's (Bag of Chips), it's not strange he asks again.

But back on topic, what do you mean with 'not attested'? That there is no Sindarin translation of that particular word or that you could not find something resembling the word's meaning?

Merl: 'Not attested' means there is no attested word with that meaning. (it is called 'not attested' because some people might have made reconstructions of it, but there is no form that is attested in what we know of Tolkien's Sindarin)

I'd just like to remind everyone that anyone who answers a request here, including Atwe, is doing this purely on a volunteer basis, and really is free to answer as much or little as they like. There's nothing wrong with asking again- but do remember that no one is actually obligated to fill your request. And giving thanks when your request is answered is also good form, on this forum or anywhere.

Many thanks to Atwe for doing so much

Well sorry if my remark was inappropriate - please note that I don't visit other sections of the plaza and can have no knowing which requests are 'important army business' and which not...:) Also, the original question was not directed to me so I was a bit perplexed why then I was pinpointed.
Whenever I visit the forum and there is an interesting translation request I am happy to help, of course. But please bear in mind that Sindarin is not a complete language by any means, often it is simply impossible to provide a reasonable translation because Tolkien did not provide any and there aren't even synonyms or plausible reconstructions/neologisms for it.

Ah, thanks Dene.

LotR - I generally give thanks after all my questions have been answered, seems the most obvious time. Don't worry, we know Atwe is doing it voluntarily, and we are very grateful that (s)he is. ;-)

Atwe - It all comes down to misunderstanding, I think. =) The original request was a general one and you were the first of the listed translators to post here, so I'm not suprised Aig added your name when he repeated his request. He could've been a bit less direct about it though.

Anyway, would you be willing to try and figure out Sindarin words for those you dubbed not attested, words that have similar meanings but do exist? And thank you for the translations you have already provided, they are a great help. =)

Ok I've tried to figure out the translation for "live each moment" by myself, using my dictionary. Could somebody please tell me if this is right?

weightlessbare:  strange as it may sound, we don't really know what the verb 'live' looks like in Quenya as Tolkien has never recorded this word. Of course we've got other forms, e.g. 'life' and 'alive' are attested so one can make guesses. I've always used the form *cuia- based on verbs that come from similar stem-forms (the asterisk before a word in Elvish usually means that it does not come from Tolkien but omeone from the community has made it).
ilqua is glossed 'everything, all' so it does not really fit either; luckily the similar looking _ilya_ can mean < ="-" ="text/; =utf-8">< name="ProgId" ="Word.">< name="Generator" ="Microsoft Word 10">< name="Originator" ="Microsoft Word 10"><> "each, every, all of a particular group of things" so we can use that.

So I'd put your short sentence as

Á cuia ilya lú.

The á is an imperative particle used to indicate commands.

(Whether this makes sense in Elvish as a literal translation of an English idiom is another question.)

Hope this helps.

Pandora: please believe me if I could've come up with some plausible synonym or could've coined a plausible new neoSindarin word, I would've done so:) Sentinel is quite close to guard, so I am stuck there really, we haven't really got that many words for these occupations in Sindarin. For 'supervisor' maybe you could try *orthirn literally 'overwatcher', i.e. 'supervisor'.

Atwe - Orthirn might work. We have some old titles lying around (I believe they're mostly constructs, not attested words) so we should be able to complete the set of titles. Right now I'm of the opinion that it works even if it only sounds Sindarin (blasphemy, I know. *grins*). Thanks for your work!

Hello,

I have kind of a vague request. I'm looking for a name for my character, and have tried taking a meaning from the website suggested and translating it myself but kinda got confused, because apparently my name (Jessica) doesn't have a meaning - or at least not in the feminine form of the word.

I then decided to try to think of a name that complimented some of the character's personality features. My friend (an ex Plaza member) suggested the last name 'Belagondiel' Which would translate to 'daughter of...[someone]', and I kinda thought that since the character has sort of been a traveller, yet with no final destination in mind, a first name that portrays this quality would be fun. It would certainly be a conversation opener at times, at the least. I wondered if anybody might be able to translate something of the sort for me into Sindarin, please?

Thanks alot in advance, and don't rush yourself with this one - I have essays I should be doing instead of this so I guess you'd be doing me a favor if you made me wait for it ^^

How about Ranwen 'wanderer-maiden' (cf. Mithrandir 'grey wanderer')

Just wanted to thank you Atwe, for translating so far what you have done for me. I've decided to leave your translation as is in the story, as I don't think I'll get better elsewhere
