Quizzing the First Age: Now Begun!

Quizzing the First Age

"At the first rising of the Sun above the earth the younger children of the world awoke in the land of Hildórien in the uttermost East of Middle-earth that lies beside the eastern sea; for measured time had come upon earth, and the first of days, and the long awaiting was at an end." (HoME5, Quenta Silmarillion §82)

Greetings, and welcome to the long-awaited 'C of H Quiz'! Rather than being solely focused on Children of Húrin as both that informal name and its placement in the CoH Forum would suggest, this Quiz will be widened to focus on the entire First Age. Now, you may notice the quote above, which is here to illustrate a point — the term 'First Age' is not intended to represent the nigh-600 year portion during the Years of the Sun, but both that and the 450 Valian Years prior to that (starting at the awakening of the Elves at Cuiviénen in 4550 Years of the Trees).

As the First Age is longer than the following ones, you should find a wide variety of topics to quiz on, limited not by place but only time — both Aman and Middle-earth (naturally including Beleriand) are viable, whether you wish to ask about the music of Ulmo's horns or the craftmanship of the gates of Gondolin.

The other constraint, of course, is what sources you are allowed to choose questions from — based on the choices of the capable Quiz Master and Quiz Mistress, Beren Camlost and Ethuil e-Daur., the resources selected have been Children of Húrin (of course), Unfinished Tales ( meaning the 'First Age' portion)  HoME 1-4, and the portion Quenta Silmarillion of the published Silmarillion.

The format of this Quiz will be that the person who guesses the previous question correctly can ask the next question; here are some rules:

1. Only one question at a time
2. The correct answer must be verified before posting the next question
3. All Plaza rules should be followed
4. If two days have gone by and no one has guessed the question correctly, the asker needs to provide a hint
5.Citations / quotations must be used to confirm the answer
6. Participation / correct answers are tributed

It will be up to the two QM's to enforce the rules and contact participants if need be (e.g. if a hint isn't provided after the two days, &c.), but we wish you luck and hope you enjoy!

Having the honor of the first question just to get this rolling, How did Tuor find the Gate of the Noldor (Annon-in-Gelydh)?

Is it the Nauglamir? It passed from the hands of the dwarves (the beard) (the Silmarillion, The Return of the Noldor) who made it; to the hands of Thingol (his name means 'grey-cloak' - the cloak) (the Silmarillion, Of the Ruin of Doriath) Húrin "gives" it to him as payment for his '... fair keeping of my children and my wife!'; but I'm not sure about the last part: the stunted. Does this mean Mîm, who found the Nauglamir in the ruins of Nargothrond before Húrin killed him and gave it to Thingol (the Silmarillion, Of the Ruin of Doriath)?

That's a very good guess, Stinker, and you're not completely offmark. It could almost count as a correct guess (even though it's not what I'm thinking of) except there's one flaw; Mim had the Nauglamir before Thingol. So the object could not be the Nauglamir as you describe it, because it did not pass from the cloak (Thingol) to the stunted (Mim) but rather the reverse.
You're thinking along the right lines though, just need to consider other people or other objects.Thumbs Up

Could it be the gem Turin Turambar - who passed from the Old Men (Beards) who accompanied him to the Greycloak who sheltered him and thence to Mim the dwarf? I could not think of any other!!

A nice metaphorical interpretation and not a bad guess, Estel. But gem is more or less literal, the object is an actual item, not a person, something small of value. For a clue I can say that the cloak-part has been guessed deduced correctly.

Wait! I am having an epiphany! Maybe it is the Bearded (Hurin Thalion) who gave the Nauglafring to the Greycloak (Elu Thingol) and thence was stolen by the Stunted (Dwarves of Belegost).

I guess that answer would fit, I have only one objection. Thingol is indeed characterised as the cloak, and the dwarves are characterised as the stunted (what their sindarin name Naugrim means), and those two are correct. But Hurin is not known as bearded (he probably was bearded but it's not something we attribute to him). Consider who has as a main attribute his beard, and what sort of precious items might have come from his hand to Thingol to the dwarves (and remember, relations between Thingol and the dwarves were not always hostile, consider the times they worked for him).

Could it then be (if the gem is indeed the Nauglafring!!) from the LongBeards (dwarves who made the Nauglafring) to the Cloaked (Thingol) thence to the Stunted (Dwarves of Belegost) ? Confused

Ah no, the gem is not the nauglamir. It's not necessarily gems either, in the sense of minerals; but the answer is considered precious stones or similar (I'm not a geologist). I think you'll find the answer if you forget about the Nauglamir and consider the relationship between Thingol and the Dwarves of Belegost prior to the Nauglamir (also, it was the dwarves of Nogrod who took the Nauglamir from Menegroth, not those of Belegost).
