The Movies

With the recent hype surrounding the New Line Cinema Lord of the Rings Movie trilogy one would almost forget that there are and were other Tolkien related movie projects! Here is an overview of the various interpretations of J.R.R Tolkien's works - The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit:

Lord of the Ring - Fellowship of the Ring Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring
The first movie in Peter Jackson's interpretation of the J.R.R. Tolkien books: The Fellowship of the Ring. The movie was welcomed as one of the best movies ever and well appreciated by both fans and people unfamiliar with the Lord of the Rings books.

Lord of the Ring - The Two Towers Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers
The second movie in Peter Jackson's interpretation of the J.R.R. Tolkien books: The Two Towers. Although this movie does not stick as much to the books as the first movie, it was still received as an amazing movie with more impressive scenes than the first movie.

Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King
The third movie in Peter Jackson's interpretation of the J.R.R. Tolkien books: The Return of the King. This was the crowning achievement of the trilogy, full of amazing special effects, and earning a record-tying 11 Oscars!

Ringers: Lord of the Fans
Planet BB Entertainment in association with TheOneRing.net
97 mins Directed by Carlene Cordova

TheOneRing.net was the major focus for fans following Peter Jackson's trilogy being made and consequently they became massive; this movie/documentary came about due to their desire to share their footage and experiences with the rest of the Tolkien-loving public - it is by the fans, for the fans.

This is a humorous feature-length documentary, narrated by Dominic Monaghan. (? yes, the chap that played Merry) about how Tolkien?s creation The Lord of the Rings has influenced Western popular culture since its release five decades ago. Showing the rise of the books? popularity and the wave of fanaticism that still rides it, this film explores all the avenues that fans have taken to show their love for the books ? art, music, fan-fiction, re-enactments, learning the languages, care for the environment, discussing lore ? the list goes ever on and on!

Interviews with the actors from Peter Jackson?s films displaying their love of the subject matter are arranged around the different chapters; there are a lot of psychedelic segues showing dancing, but don?t let this put you off ? there are some absolutely hilarious inclusions ? Leonard Nimoy singing The Ballad of Bilbo is one that stands out.

Interspersed amongst all these mini-documentaries are snippets and comments by the fans, for whom and by whom this movie was made. Some made their comments in a confessional at Comic Con in July 2003, giving a personal testimony of their love of LotR ? ranging from the emotive to the insane, and some fans were interviewed whilst queuing to see the films - in both of these the appearance of Sala Baker and Andy Serkis (doing his characters? voices) are a treat.

One of the contributors to the artwork shown in this documentary is the plaza?s own Protoguy, Guy Gondron! Check him out at IMDb http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379473/fullcredits

The Hobbit The Hobbit Animated - Warner Studios
Directors Jules Bass & Arthur Rankin created the animated movie of The Hobbit in 1977. It can be seen as the first part of a trilogy of animated movies starting with The Hobbit and ending with the Return of the King.

The Lord of the Rings Animated- Warner Studios
Director Ralph Bakshi created the first part of the Lord of the Rings animated movie in 1978. Unfortunately he never completed the second part. The first part covers the Fellowship of the Rings and the first half of the Two Towers then ends quite abruptly.

The Return of the King The Return of the King Animated - Warner Studios
Directors Jules Bass & Arthur Rankin created the animated movie that begins where Bakshi left off and ends with the conclusion of the Lord of the Rings.

Some general comments regarding movie interpretations of Tolkien's Books
In our opinion it is impossible to capture the depth of Tolkien's books in a movie or even a movie trilogy. In order to enjoy a Tolkien-inspired movie, one should keep this in mind and not be too critical and expect an exact account of all the characters and events described in the books. It would take a movie series of perhaps 100 hours to put the exact Lord of the Rings trilogy into a movie. Ommissions and alterations in the story and characters are an immediate consequence of trying to summarize 300 pages of a book in a 2-3 hour movie. This, however, does not mean that the movie cannot be very enjoyable or be a fascinating translation of Tolkien's work.
