The characters in Minas Tirith
The story of Saurore.
By Artist Unknown
y father was a great and noble servant of Gondor. He was messenger to the
steward of Gondor, and was a brave warrior. When I was twelve I started
following my father on his missions. I saw him do battle with Orcs many
times. When I was fourteen I followed him on a mission which took us to
Rohan. My father and three other men were to deliver a message to the king.
It was written on a scroll in some form of code that I wasn't able to
decipher. They were attacked by twenty Orcs. They managed to kill twelve of
them before they were all murdered. The Orcs took the scrolls and started
off. I ran to my father's stiff body but it was too late. He and his three
companions where already dead.
ondering on what I should do, I took up my father's sword, Enduril, the
sword which my father's father had forged. Placing this on my belt and
casting away the rusty Orc knife, I went to my fathers friend, Rendahn, and
took from him his dagger, "Hornet". Taking my fathers quiver and bow, "Bear,"
I buried the four men. Above my father I carved the inscription, which in the
common tongue reads:
Here lies Sembyan
Son of Kidyon
Father of Saurore
ith my newly acquired weapons I set off after the Orcs. A day later and only
a few leagues from Rohan, I caught up with them. On the rise of a hill I first
spotted them. They were torturing a Rohan horse, and I readied my bow. With
an arrow strung I pulled back on the string as my father taught me, and
fired. The first shot hit an Orc square between the eyes. My second shot
went wide by a hair and the third shot caught an Orc in the chest. I never
got off a fourth shot for they charged at me. I pulled Sting from the sheath
on my ankle and threw it. It got an Orc right in the throat. I pulled Enduril
out of its sheath for the first time and readied myself. The five remaining
Orcs charged. I parried the first blow and struck the Orc down. The second I
stabbed in the chest and the third I attacked. He blocked my first two blows
easily and then he attacked. I parried the first, he missed with the second
and before he could get off a third strike, his head was gone. The next Orc
started his attack and I got his arm off. The armless and the cowardly Orc
ran from the battle, but I did not pursue him.
ying next to the ground was the scroll that my father was to deliver.
Picking this and "Hornet" up, I walked to a nearby log. Sitting down I cleaned
off both blades and took a drink from my flask. I then got up and walked
toward the magnificent horse. The large animal did not stir and when I
approached it, it came to me. Not knowing the name of the creature I said to
him: "Friend, would you be so kind as to give me a ride to Rohan, your home and
my destination?" Tucking away the scroll and checking my belongings, I
attempted to sit on the horse. He let me without any trouble. We then
proceeded on to Rohan. At the gates we were met by a guard. I told him
quickly about my reason for coming and he told me to leave my weapons with
the gatekeeper. Agreeing I entered the city with him and the horse. He took
me to the king.
stood before the king and bowed. "Greetings, your highness," I said. "I am
Saurore, son of Sembyan. I bring to you a message from the Steward of
Gondor." I explained to him about what happened to my father. I told him of
how I battled the Orcs to recover the scrolls. He thanked me and had one of his servants take me to a room were I could rest
and recover from the battle and my days of riding. He thanked me for returning his nephew's horse and for the scrolls.
he next morning, I packed my things. I was ready to leave when one of the
king's servants came to my room and handed me a scroll. He bowed and turned to leave. He walked quickly from the room. I opened the scroll. It was
an invitation to have dinner with King.
hat night, after we finished our meal, the king stood up to speak. "I would
like to give thanks to Saurore for returning my nephew's steed. Since the
young lad has proven himself battle worthy with family weapons, I guess the
only thing I can offer him is extra protection. So before he leaves, I would
like to present Saurore with a little gift." He nodded to his servant, and the
servant came out with a vest of mithril. The king took this and presented it
to me. I thanked him and bowed. Then we had a reception party and I was the
guest of honor. I went to my room afterwards, for I would have a long journey
home.
