Minas Tirith's Hospital

Hello, and welcome to Niennas´ world of Life and Healing!

Well, let us get things straight, folks, and I don´t want to appear impolite but I don´t have too much time to show you around so let´s make it quick and clean! I´m a busy woman and my patients need all my attention. So, where do we start, ah yes these are the Houses of Healing,

" Houses of Healing. "

As we look to the right, it´s the building with on it´s groundfloor kitchen and laundry. The tower and the first floor are my private quarters as the second floor are my study room and little library, where I keep my countless scrolls with more or less interesting writings concerning medical phenomenons or recipes of secret potions etc. etc..! The wooden oriel, that you may have already noticed, shows my famous bedroom window, where I waste my entire supply on candles on my nightly illuminations, mostly in vain, as I have to admit! My rooms are so comfortable that I maybe sell my little cottage one day, including that hideous dwarf-servant, who´s yelling at me all day long anyway! But I would miss my waterfall....!

A covered passageway connects the residential building with the Healing Hall on the left.
There are beds for 50 patients ( but it can be extended to 150 patients in emergency cases.) Like the Plague. "Ach du lieber Himmel," we had that once, people were falling sick all over the place, working fighting eating their meals. One minute everything o kay, the next, " poof" they were coming out in spots and boils all over their bodies, ugh ! it was horrible. We had to bar and lock the hospital doors to stop the sick coming in, there was too many of them !
Lady Arwen helped us with the locks if I remember !
The building also has two operating rooms, which are busy places as you can imagine. Especially when there is some battle or war taking place.Sometimes it becomes just like an abbatoir for cows ! Oh Dear I am so sorry, will someone pick that lady up, and give her a glass of water and some air please.

On the ground floor and the first floor, there are special rooms for examinations, I also keep in there my supplies of herbs, drugs, medical intruments and er other ancillieries that I might need!
Oh ! I forgot the quarters for the assistants are on the first floor, too.( they were on the second floor originally, but their commings and goings at all hours, was very disturbing, I also needed a little more privacy from them, for the little private examinations I carried out,
for " special people ".

The main entrance to the Healing Halls is on the left side through that little tower where another dovecote is located in it´s little roof, for, er, some reasons! I think I like doves very much, as I cannot affort a palantir for my, let´s say, urgent messages to the Royal Quarters!

Though my life is very strenous and busy, I enjoy it very much and consider it to be very fulfilling!

And I´m proud of my recent success in healing a Ranger from, as I call it, mental instability by making a small hole into the skull of this poor man and letting some fresh air to his brains.

He now seems to be fully recovered and is sometimes to be seen at the pubs.He has no complaints after the treatment, although several people have commented on the fact, that on some evenings in the local pub, if they sit close enough to him, they can hear the sea !
I am afraid I cannot reveal his identity due to proffesional confidentiallities etc, but please if you experience the same thing one evening in our local pub, do not embarrass the poor man, by staring at him.I hear his wife is not too please however with the operation, as she preferred him a little more " fuddle brained " as it were, apparently she was want to indulge in little fancies with certain of the cities younger boys, She now finds her husbaned to be a bit more suspicious of her since the operation ! I take it as a compliment though, but to keep the peace I have him back every few weeks to the hospital, supposedly for check ups.It allows her to continue with her escapades and so everyone is happy !

Also I did develop a very quick and almost painless method to lower the high bloodpressure by my famous bloodletting techiques

See Arteris the scribe comes often for the treatment and he is still smiling, so don´t be afraid and come along, especially those of you , who are getinng easily upset and a little fractious these days! It helps to releases all your inner tensions ...Mormegil is all for releasing er shall we say our inner feelings
I am sorry about the picture though, it was taken last Christmas Eve, when Arteris offered to play St. Nick for the children in the City, see he is still wearing his funny hat. But it does prove a point, a couple of hours later he was singing and dancing with the children, a little tired maybe, but after a few glasses of his preferred Merlot, he was as good as new.

This treatment although slightly risky, is an improvement of my previous methods, which included the use of leeches... I´m keeping them as pets now!

There is also a new way to overcome shoulder problems, which I am experimenting with these days.

If it works it will be a blessing, The number of shoulder injuries is steadily increasing I am afraid .
It must have something to do with all the extra equipment the poor Rangers have to carry on patrol these days.
Swords big and small, spears and shields They have to be big and strong in the Rangers these days Or perhaps my cavalier gondorians are lifting too many mugs of ale each night in all those pubs and inns in Minas Tirith.

Well who can blame them they are soldiers are they not. They work hard and so they play hard, boy, do they play hard. Inn after inn, we are allways rebuilding new pubs and inns. However the treatment is is a very gentle method, it involves plenty of rest and relaxation while the er joint is held in a fixed immoveable position.
The King enjoys it very much, he treats himself to a session with me, every time he drops by. He is a big baby that King, allways wanting nienna to cure him of something or other.

Here you can see a few of my tools of the trade so to speak.
They are very advanced for the times, don't you think.
The King and Queen are quite lavish with their spending on the hospital.
I hope the King is happy with what he receives back from us. All the girls try really hard to please His Majesty, and Lady Arwen of course, she is our patron you know, Arwen Evenstar....with a lamp.

But, do I bore you with these complicated and not so pleasant remarks? No? You are very brave!
Well, talking about being lavish! Ours are not so generous regarding the new carts I ordered lately for the transport of new patients from the Main Gates to the fifth level. Tis embarrassing, isn’t it!

Never mind!

Where were we, yes, and my main occupation was and still is the treatment of all kind of wounds that a Soldier and Ranger will be inflicted with on the battlefields and the training grounds! Most of the time it looks worst than it is, but sometimes...

Ah... here we come to one of my favourite subjects.
I don’t know why most of you are very sensitive to this matter and that, when I mention my work at the hospital I’m suddenly standing alone, talking to myself! So, for those we’ll skip the detailed portrayal of the proceedings of amputation. I only wanted to say that I’m prepared, just in case!

And we do have some very extraordinary carpenters and carvers who are proud of their very realistic replicas of wooden arms and legs!

But you don’t have to worry very much of the pain and after-effects of these operations, for I am a skilled and experienced Connoisseur of drugs and herbs! As I mentioned earlier I do have, er, a close connection to The White Council, which provides me with the newest and most powerful potions and remedies!

This is, of course, only one of my portable emergency drug-drawer I used to take to the battlefields or in emergency cases,
the Healing Houses accommodate a large pharmacy and at my shop on the first level of the city I sell different sorts of dried and fresh herbs, drugs, potions, balms and crèmes for private users!

As I was the Healer of the Rangers, and responsible for the suitability and fitness of the Rangers and their health problems there are also matters of less importance to me such as toothache and eye disease/eye complaint which I have not the time to deal with, so there are other healer, of minder talents, who will help me out every now and then! Well, one day, Gwaihir, you know, Gwai do you? Well she came to me with something in her eye! Of course I knew that she only was feigning that, as she always does, when the King is around, but I gave her something to remember!

Well, she never showed up again with a complaint and her eyes have been ok ever since!
And toothache, well, one of my assistants is very, err, special with tooth extractions! He puts all the teeth on a string right away and uses it as his favourite necklace!

A bit odd, as I may say so, but he is the best healer of toothaches I’m afraid, so I cannot give him the boot! Robyn, the new Master Healer of the Rangers, is taking care of the minor wounded and not too seriously injured soldiers at the little hospital next to the Rangers Head Quarters! We are in close contact and the very dangerous and serious wounds I treat in the Houses of Healing!
Oh I’m so happy that I don’t have to go to the battlefields anymore! I hated the draughty tents and the bad food! And the camp beds, bah! Poor Robyn, hahahaa!

Ah, where are we, oh yes! I’ve been always asked, what is in that tiny green bottle I’m keeping locked up so secretly!

Well, it’s a powerful drug, a potion, which gives you new power and makes you feel better in seconds no matter what injury you might suffer from! But you can only use it once a year on the same person; otherwise it will kill you instantly!

Huan, the Captain of the Rangers, well he had to take a sip at this mysterious liquid and it helped. You may ask him how, but it did! It is an ancient mixture of several herbs, body parts of little animals, and grated stones! And it’s green, as I said!

Due to medical confidentiality I’m not allowed to tell that Eldarion, who supposed to be my son (I still refuse to believe that) is still suffering
from pimples and plus he is allergic to straw and horses, for some reason, I don’t know!

And that Thorongil is still practicing the famous urine-therapy, successfully!

Arteris is trying my new created fat burning pills made from 1 ounce nightshade, 1 bat eye, 2 frogs toes and 1 very small crushed green Anduin pebble! At least it stops his appetite for two hours.

Anna and Huan, well those two are suffering from chapped lips every now and then! I said that is results from too much kissing, but they don’t
even want to listen to their healer! Fools of love, as I may say so!

Morrandir, my dear friend, well, I do warn him periodically, that a one-night-stand ends in the morning but there are diseases, which I don’t like to mention, that last a lifetime… he promised to be careful when visiting Mordor the next time!!

And Trey, she loves my valerian-lemon balm tea, for she is always working too hard and needs a good nights sleep to recover from her busy days!

And not to mention Jezabelle, who always is the loner, the outsider! Did you ever ask yourself why? Well, I’m afraid I’m to blame for that, cause one of the ingredients of her power pills I do prescribe for her regularly is garlic! Sorry, Jez, but it is a powerful drug!

And last but not least my dear Queen, who seems to suffer from hysterical outbursts, but folks, that isn’t true!
We are the reason for her yelling and stamping her foot! A potion of 2 tablespoons of brandy, 2 of Areyegaga-flower (very rare), and 2 of sweet honey wine and she calms down instantaneously!

The King Aragorn/Mormegil made me take an oath not to say anything about his little indispositions! The only thing that I can say with a safe conscience is:
1. he is a man
2. he is very healthy
3. he is a hell of a err swimmer!

I could go on forever with that but I guess, that those I didn’t mention here in public will be very thankful that I didn’t reveal their little medical secrets. I keep it all in my heart, my dear friends! May Eru bless you all!

When you walk round the buildings you will have noticed the entrance to a garden lying behind the right building! It is my sacred garden,my Refugio, so to speak, so no pictures of that!
There I grow my herbs and flowers, for medical purpose and for private use! As I decided to spend more time in Minas Tirith I needed a place where I can be alone sometimes, to meditate, to contemplate and to receive visitors in a very private circle.

One of the many skills of Princess Elwing is the creation of a garden to your very personal liking!
She persuaded me to have a little waterfall build! Though artificial it looks like my waterfall on Cair Andros!
To make me feel more at home, so she said.
It’s a wonderful place to be and I won’t be missing my old cottage.

Here my tour around the Houses of Healing ends for you, because I don’t want to disturb my patients any longer!
I could show you so much more of the techniques of operating and healing but you are looking quite pale already so we will stop that here!
I hope I wasn’t boring you to death,… ah… death! But that maybe another tour and at another time for you, my dear friends!

Thanks to Alex Peck and Dr. Doug Arbittier for their permission to use some of those beautiful pictures! Those catalogues and my fantasy gave my some wonderful nightmares!

more to be added in due course
