Song of the Noldor’s
Farewell
We crossed the ice
to make it here,
This Middle Earth we hold so dear.
We’ve made our life where first we woke,
Long ago, ere aught was broke.
We came from lands of gold and green,
Beyond the mountains and the stream,
Where only stars first were viewed,
And where our souls with dreams imbued.
We crossed the ice, all dressed in blood,
From Telari slain upon the mud.
And banished we who killed our kin,
To n’er see bright Valinor again.
But we have seen the long dark days,
And repented of our wicked ways.
For nothing more do our hearts long,
Than to hear sweet Vala song.
We have seen war, and have lived death,
And watched our lovers draw last breath.
The rise of men, and fall of Kings,
We Noldor have known all these things.
Long we’ve paid for sins long done,
Beneath the moon, beneath the sun.
We have grown tired of this shore,
And shall depart here evermore.
For the Twilight of the elves is come,
And all we’ve worked for now is done.
We shall depart to Havens Gray,
And to Middle Earth bid namárië.
We shall not mourn for what was lost,
Nor that we’ve paid an awful cost,
But rejoice in the return of long lost friends,
In Valinor, where sadness ends.
Do not cry tears, ye who are left,
That of the elves have now been bereft.
For our song still lives in every tree,
From now and though eternity.
Middle Earth is thine to keep,
Her bountiful harvests thine to reap.
Her shining rivers thine in care,
And all her woes are thine to bear.
Over the seas of deepest blue,
We pass to lands of golden hue.
We say good-bye and bid you joy,
For Fate is a mistress strange and coy.
What once we lost, we now have found,
As we step on Tirion’s hollowed ground.
At last we’ve come where our hearts are blessed,
Here into the West that we have loved the best.
