The characters in Minas Tirith
The story of Thorongil.
By David Spácil
horongil, loyal servant of Mormegil and Gilraen, rulers of Gondor, is an imposing figure. He reaches a height roughly
one quarter taller than man-high. However, he is also a warm and welcoming person and easy to make
friends with. Most people address him as Thoron and some closer acquaintances refer to him as Thoro. But beware, never
call him Thor. In reality, he prefers to be called sir but no one obliges him on this little
fancy. He originated in a small agrarian community in Cardolan in central Eriador. When he was gone on a hunting trip
in his mid-twenties however, orc raiders razed his town and slaughtered its people, including his young wife
and two infant children. With no other purpose left in his life, he followed those orcs south until he had caught them.
He then infiltrated their camp and avenged the lives of his loved ones. After that, he continued towards
Gondor, participating in a variety of adventures such as discovering and stopping a conspiracy by Dunlendings to assassinate King Eomer of the Mark.
He recorded a much more detailed version of his voyage in a narrative titled 'Thorongil's Quest' which can be found in the
Fan Fiction and Poetry Forum. It is also an official document of the Gondorian government.
Once he had reached Gondor, he joined the Elite Rangers, Gondor's premier military formation. Taking up his trusty
battle-axe, he joined the small but sturdy axeman division. Finding a residence was the next priority. He eventually found a comfortable room rented out by an elderly couple named
Blanco and Galadhial. It was not very big, but the rent was reasonable and the food was spectacular. This room was situated
within the second circle of Minas Tirith. It was an ideal location. Close to the Rangers HQ in the first circle, but also
close to the library and other attractions in the next circle.
hen Thorongil is not on duty, his spends his time at a variety of activities. He frequents the library to read up on
the histories of Middle Earth. He belongs to a book reading club there with some of his friends and
contributes yearly to the library fund-raisers. Thorongil is also a member of the 'White Tree Track Club' where he
holds the record for the 5000 and 10000 ranga distances. At nights you can find him in the various pubs of the
city, drinking ale, or perhaps swapping tales with his friend Elwing. Another of his favourite spots in the city
is the Rangers Training Grounds where he meets with Jezabelle to drink tequila and spar. He has been known
to fight Balrogs there in his signature pink tights, but you are lucky if you actually see him do it. Truth be told,
Treyan Andune is the only one who ever saw him do it.
he one spot in the city that Thorongil tries very hard to avoid are the Houses of Healings.
You see, while he was there for a brief time after suffering a poisonous wound in some battle that needed the King's
attention, Ioreth, the wise old woman of Minas Tirith, developed quite a crush on him.
It is hard to blame her though, considering Thorongil's charming nature and dashing good looks, not to mention his
modesty. After her original propositions were politely rejected, she did not back down. Thorongil
needed to tell her that such a relationship would create jealousy in the hearts of the young women of Minas Tirith so she would stop pestering him.
Even still, Thorongil doesn't dare ask for medical attention there but instead visits Nienna, the Master Healer of
Minas Tirith.
ack at home, Thorongil assists Blanco around the house, fixing the odd problems with the building, and helps Galadhial
clean up after supper.
After participating in many campaigns as a member of the Rangers, he received the honour of being promoted to 1st Axeman.
It has taken awhile, but he has finally adjusted to his new life and is completely settled in Minas Tirith.
