Elanor Evermind
In the quiet farmland of the South Farthing, Elanor was born one fine spring day to Gordo and Ruby Brandybuck. Far from Brandy Hall, Gordo’s father Berilac had been a successful grower of pipeweed tobacco and they never ventured far from their home except to visit Buckland and to go to market.
It was on one of these trips to the Shire Market that Gordo first laid eyes on Ruby Gamgee, daughter of Mayor Samwise and the lovely Rosie. Ruby was working at The Green Dragon, just as her mother Rosie had done, when the young Gordo stopped in for a halfpint.
The two were married after a short courtship and one year later their first child Elanor Evermind was born with a head of curly brown hair and sparkling green eyes. She was named in Hobbit fashion for the flowers cousin Meriadoc and Grandpa Sam had seen on their travels: elanor, the yellow star-shaped flower of Lothlorien; and evermind, also called simbelmyne, the white flower which grew on the mounds of the kings of Rohan.
It was not easy for Ruby to leave her home behind, but Gordo kept her happy and took her to market as often as possible to see her family. A son, Milo, was born into the family on the couple’s third anniversary.
One considerably damp spring, before Elanor’s third birthday, Gordo became ill. His health failed rapidly, and even after seven months of care by the best herbalists in the Shire, Gordo succumbed and was laid to rest in the family plot on the westward slopes of the Green-Hill Country near Pincup.
So it was that Ruby was left to raise little Elanor and Milo on her own. She moved back north to be closer to her parents and siblings, knowing she would need help now and then. The kind proprietor of The Green Dragon took Ruby back at her former position and even offered them a small hole to rent just north of Bywater.
Surrounded by family, Elanor grew up much loved and was very fond of her kin. When she was of an age to begin working, Elanor took on chores at the Inn alongside her mother such as cleaning up tables and sweeping the front stoop. By the time she was in her tweens, Elanor was working behind the bar, laughing at the patrons’ stories and jokes, and trying to keep those who had "had a bit too much" in line.
After his twenty-fifth birthday, Milo decided to move back to the South Farthing to try his hand at farming pipeweed, leaving the two ladies alone. Life was pleasant and predictable for many years. In their off hours, Elanor and Ruby would sew and quilt beside the fireside, and Ruby would frequently tell tales of her father Samwise Gamgee’s adventures in the lands east of the Misty Mountains.
One rainy summer day, Ruby decided to take the pony cart and visit Milo. Since they could not both be absent, Elanor stayed behind to work at the Green Dragon. Tragedy struck Ruby when a bridge over a creek just south of the Tuckborough road was taken by flashflooding, and the poor Hobbit with it. Ruby was laid to rest on the hill next to Gordo.
A year after losing her mother, Elanor heard of an opportunity to work at a pub in Minas Tirith in far off Gondor. Wanting to visit the places her beloved grandfather and cousin had been on their travels, Elanor gave notice at the pub, packed up her most precious belongings and took to the road with her pony Toby. While working in the White City, an opportunity arose to go on a quest. Elanor joined up in order to aid those who were going on this rescue mission.
Two important friendships were made due to this adventure: Ea made a gift of a dagger which came in quite handy; and Jakle Brewer was part of the company and a welcome companion. Both of these hobbits became cherished friends, making the whole episode life changing.
At this date, Elanor is residing at the Leapin’ Lizard while refurbishing her hobbit hole in the East Farthing. She keeps busy with the Debate and Drill Teams and is a member of the Shire Academy staff. There is not a kingdom on Middle Earth where Elanor would rather be than her beloved Shire.
Endymion
I came to the Shire as happy_hobbit, in the seventh of Solmath in Shire reckoning. I was a very young Hobbit then, but the Elders were very helpful and friendly to me; Dalorwen, Frodo, Gollum, Banazîr, Pippeness, and specially Sare, the first Thain that I became friends with. In no time I had a place of my own, my own pipe as well, and Hobbit-friends who made me feel very welcome. One of my closest friends, Pippeness, was elected as one of our Co-Rulers a short time after I arrived in the Shire.
When I came of age, I was given a new name, thus am now known as Endymion. Some time after, Pippeness had to vacant her position, and had to move on, and I was chosen to fill her place. Sad as I am for her leaving, but I know the weight of the responsibility that she had asked me to fulfill, thus, though with some tinge of sadness, I took up the role of Thain alongside Sare.
Time came when I experienced the familiar sadness when it was Sare’s turn to step down. I was terribly sad as well, but we understand her, and accepted her decision. My very good friend, who also became my sister, Banazîr, was elected new Thain, and together we had a wonderful time helping each other out in watching over the Shire.
But I had to move on as well, and now I reside in Valinor, being bestowed upon by Eru the powers of Lorien. I still watch over the Shire, but now from afar, but not with less care and affection. Seregon took my place, and the Shire gained a very respectable leader.
I had a wonderful stay in the Shire, thanks to my friends and to my family. I had the most wonderful godmothers – Grey Pilgrim and Lulani, as well as siblings – Susannah, Banazîr, Seregon, Garnet, and Pepin Took. They took care of me very much. I always enjoyed the wacky times in the Great Tree, where we played with umbrellas and hammocks. I must admit I do miss them a lot already.
Through my godmother GP I got to know the loveliest Hobbit I had ever seen – Prisca Boffin. It was during a tour of the Hobbit Holes in the Shire that I first met her. She was relatively new then, but her smile made me feel at ease with her. Through the days I felt closer to her, as we shared times with one another participating in the activities in the Shire. Hers was the most delectable apple pie that I had ever tasted, and I always looked forward to it whenever we have gatherings in the Shire.
Early this year came the Shining Star Ball. I know the time had come that I propose to her. Still being the bashful Hobbit as I am, I did manage to pull all my courage together, and brought to her the finest ring that I had found and asked for her hand in marriage during the ball, but I almost ran out of the room before I heard her answer. But, seeing the Vala Orome and Varda at the Ball brought me some courage still, and managed to come back to hear the sweetest answer any man can ever hear – a yes. My heart leapt with joy, and I have never been happier. We just had our engagement party, and shall have the wedding a few months in the future.
I don’t know what wonderful things may come yet in the future, but look forward to every new day with a smile in my heart.
