What is the Shire?

The Shire is the Kingdom of the Hobbits. It is located in the land of Eriador, to the West of the Misty Mountains. The Shire itself is located between the Brandywine River and Far Downs. You may know the Shire as the home of Frodo, Merry, Pippin, and Sam, all heros during the War of the Ring.

What are Hobbits?

J.R.R Tolkien described Hobbits as, "...little people, smaller than Dwarves. They love peace and quiet and good tilled earth. They dislike machines, but they are handy with tools. They are nimble but don’t like to hurry. They have sharp eyes and ears. They are inclined to be fat. They wear bright colors but seldom wear shoes. They like to laugh and eat (six meals a day) and drink. They like parties and they like to give and receive presents.”

What is it like to be a Hobbit?

Hobbits are fun loving people, they love to smoke, drink, and eat! As you develop your plaza character, you will become
involved in many different Shire activites!

Who are the Rulers of the Shire?

The current Rulers of the Shire are Feiniel (Samwise Gamgee) and Miriath (Pippin Took). These two run the Shire, supervise its threads, and take part in many activites. They work very hard to make the Shire the beautiful place that it is so they deserve all of your respect. If you need to contact them privately please email them at Shirerulers@yahoo.com

Have there been past Rulers?

Yes, there have been several past rulers. The Shire’s very first Ruler was Sare, she was Rosie Cotton, and the Shire's first Samwise Gamgee was Pippeness. Then there was Endymion, the previous Samwise Gamgee who can be seen as Lorien. Banazir (Rose Cotton and Samwise Gamgge) stepped down and for a while was the Admin Nienna but she is a regular hobbit now. Seregon (Rose Cotton) can be found as the Admin, Vána. Rosebud (Rose Cotton) before she stepped down to be a regular hobbit. Blackrose Bugg (Samwise Gamgee) until she became the Admin Varda. Eamila Bolger, one Samwise can be found as a regular hobbit in the Shire again. Brandybuck was a long time ruler of the Shire in Rosie Cotton's feet. She ruled for over a year before stepping up to adminship as the weaver Vaire, you'll still see her about the place quite often! Elanor Evermind was the Shire's first Frodo Baggins, you can still find that sweet hobbit about the Shire as well, she's a big fan of the Drill Team! Tari Boffin, was the Shire's most recent Samwise Gamgee for about a year before she moved up now to adminship as Este - The Healer. She can still be found role playing and working on the Tuckborough Tribune in the Shire. Anson Baranduin, stepped down and back into the Shire as her regular hobbit self. She used to be Frodo Baggins, but now you can still find her out and about and ready to have fun! Show these old rulers high respect as well as they still continue to lurk around the Shire. They are never too far away if you need something. In the case of a Ruler needing a break or backup they're right there to lend a hand.

Are there other people in charge?

Eru, the Administrators, and Rulers of the other Kingdoms, make up a group called the RAs who take care of the Plaza in general. So in the absence of any Shire Ruler, these others can attend to matters concerning the Shire.

I'm new to the Shire, can I make a thread to meet people?

No, you are not allowed to make a thread in the Shire forum. If you do so your thread will be deleted, with possible pending penalty. You may however, meet other plaza members in the forum entitled Newbies and Introductions or in the Shire at The Great Tree Center for Newbies and Visitors.

Am I ever allowed to make a new thread?

Yes, though all threads in the Shire have to have permission of the rulers before they are made. You can suggest the idea for your thread at the Mayors' Office. The reason that new threads cannot be opened at will is to reduce the clutter in the kingdom. Rulers will approve threads that are necessary. They decide which threads are opened or closed.

I have an announcement to make, where do I go?

All announcements dealing with things in and out of the kingdom are to be reported at the Bywater Bulletins not the Post Office. Any announcements regarding happenings in real life such as a vacation for a period of time may be reported to The There And Back Again office.

May I host a party?

There was a day when anyone could open a party and have silly randomness, but with the size of the kingdom that just isn't possible anymore. Only the Rulers can start party threads in the Shire. But if, for example, it’s your birthday and you are a high ranker who really want to celebrate it with your fellow Hobbits, you can ask the Rulers to start a party thread for you. It’s up to them if they’ll start it or not.

How do I join an existing Role Play Game (RPG)?

Anyone is welcome in any role playing game! Though if you're not there for the start, you are always allowed to join in so long as the rules allow you to. Just simply go to the thread and read all the posts. Then think of a valid excuse for why you are coming in so late! If you are joining a RPG that is a long journey, do not say that you ran all the way from the Shire to Rohan! That is simply not believable! In such cases pretend as though you've been there all along. If you need more help on role playing please look at our Guidelines For Role Playing page over.

I have a great idea for a new RPG! May I start my own thread?

You may not open a thread without your rulers permission. Though if you have a really grand idea, you may go to the Mayors' Office and tell them your idea. If you have an idea concerning the Hobbit Defense Squad (HDS), you may go to their own headquarters with your idea.

What can I do in the Shire?

There are plenty of activities for you to participate in in the Shire, feel free to browse through the threads to find something you like. We cater for all tastes here! Or, alternatively go to the Longbottom Link Library page to read more about each of our current activities.

How can I contribute?

You can read the latest news about the Shire and the Plaza here, as well as special interviews, literary works, announcements and advertisements. At current, its editor is Istya Alassea. You may contribute to the paper when the thread is opened each month. You should also participate in the many role playing games we have. Those who are active and contribute greatly to the kingdom receive point tributes from the Mayors. An additional reward given to those who contribute greatly to a kingdom is a special character rank. A special character rank allows you to wear the face of an important hobbit such as Frodo or Pippin for 30 days. The Mayors decide who receive SCRs as they are called.

Help! I'm still confused!?

Still confused? Well then please head over the Great Tree Center for Newbies and Visitors and introduce yourself
and ask your questions! There are friendly hobbits just waiting to help new members like you.
