Wizard's Skeeball
by Arwe Thereyet

A long time favorite of carnival goers everywhere, Skeeball came to Isengard
on December 12, 2002. Participants played individually, answering a question in
order to receive a ball with the possibility of receiving five balls total. Once
the participant answered Arwe's question, the participant had to pick one of the
five numbers letters in Arwe's post. The choice determined the score received
for that ball. The points, of course, matched up with the points one could get
playing skeeball.
For example: A=20 B=40 C=10 D=50 E=30
Along with receiving points for rolling the ball into a pocket, participants also received points for the creativity of their posts.
The questions that had to be answered were thought-provoking, intellectual, and insightful, and most importantly, fun.
- Well, what does it gots in it’s pocketses?
- How are you feeling, if you’ve gone all spoogely?
- Are mice nice?
- How can you tell, if your horse is looking for a new master?
- Give me your own special recipe for Yuletide Pudding
After missing out on two rounds, Grey Pilgrim made a quick comeback and ended up winning the competition with 250 points. Second
place went to Elen Sila with 240 points, and Hoyamir took third receiving 230 points.
Round Two of Skeeball opened on January 13, 2003 and in this round, participants could receive anywhere from 10 to 30 points,
depending on the creativity of their posts. This, of course, was on top of their points for "rolling the ball." The questions were
a bit more challenging this time around.
- First, participants had to convine Arwe that either Fuschia or Chartreuse should be her new favorite color.
- The second problem really caused participants to use their brain, as they were asked to give the proper name for the following
definition:
You’ve got that scratchy, itchy, someone-just-saw-me-do-something-stupid feeling. Your nose tingles, your eyebrows get twitchy,
and little goosebumps run up and down your spine.
- The third activity to complete was to compose a poem of at least 5 words, longer than 2 letters. Participants could throw in all the 1 or 2
letter words they wanted. Sounds easy, huh? Except all the words must rhyme, except for the one or two letter words, and conjunctions
(and , but, unless, because). It’s really not that hard, unless you pick nasssty little words to rhyme like I (Arwe) did. Then you’re lucky
to find five that rhyme and make sense at the same time.
Example: Ode to a Toad A toad stowed In a load He rode to my abode.
- Next, participants had the following challenge: There’s an old Bob Dylan song (he’s not from around here, so you might not know
him) that says: The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind - So tell me... what answer is the wind blowin’?
- Finally, Arwe gave the contestants a What If type of question: If you had a time machine, and could travel to the distant future -
like, say 2003 AD (I know, that’s so far in the future Ea may not last that long. And what’s an AD, anyway?) ; what one thing would
you bring back to Middle Earth, to show your friends.
When all was said and done, Maiarian Man walked away with first place, receiving 330 points. Hoyamir and Marina tied for second place,
each of them receiving 300 points.
