In Valinor, Arwe was first a friend and companion of
Uinen, for they both loved the water. They took joy from the myriad
sounds of it in all its many forms. They waded in the streams; they
swam in the lakes; they frolicked in the ocean waves. But Arwe's mind
was always going and her hands were never still. Each new thing she
saw, she crafted something new from it, in her mind. So Uinen suggested
to Aule that he take Arwe as a helper, and he agreed. Enthusiastically
she gathered things and conveyed to Aule's mind the beautiful fabrics
to be woven, the statues to be carved, and the new colors to be combined.
Aule saw it and was glad. But sometimes after Arwe found the things
she needed, and pictured how it would be, she neglected to actually
make it. Instead she was rushing off to a new idea. Then Aule suggested to Manwe that it might be good to send Arwe to Middle-earth to inspire thought and creativity in others, who could actually complete the things she saw. Este thought that was a great idea, for whenever Arwe was around those places Este had hallowed for rest, she kept trying to get everyone to do something. "Besides," said Tulkas, "Her singing is atrocious, even worse than mine." Others piped in, "And she makes up words when she can't find just the one she wants. Her hearing isn't the best for a Maia and she gets stories all mixed up." Manwe looked around. "Doesn't anyone have anything good to say about her?" They all looked back, questioningly. "That was the good!" They said. "Oh, she does ordinary good things, like caring about others, and working hard, and teaching, and helping, but it's the other things that make her interesting. We like them, we just want her to do it in Middle-earth for a while, and make it a little more interesting for them. Besides, we need a rest. "Yeah," said Tulkas. "Just for an age or two, or until they send her back." So a ship was made ready, and gifts were given, but not many, for as Varda said, "Many will give you gifts in Middle-earth, and often your life will be full." So Arwe, being one who loves to travel, excitedly made her way to Middle-earth. At first she traveled far and wide, exploring all the corners of her new land. During her travels she found a stand of ancient trees worn to stumps and a few branches. From one of these branches she carved her staff, because she felt the vast time and wisdom embedded in this wood. On a small island she met Flutterby. The small, beautiful creature is more than she seems. When in extreme danger, Flutterby emits a beam of pure light, which reduces her enemy to glittering dust. Since saving Arwe's life they have traveled together. If you see a small fluttering over Arwe's shoulder, do not be alarmed, unless your intentions are evil. Arwe lived for a while in a lilac hued crystalline tower near Dol Amroth. She retains this tower in the south, because she sometimes needs to be near the sea, but since finding Orthanc and the wonderful wizards who live there, she now lives in the Tower at Isengard full time. Arwe drives a smart little wagon pulled by her faithful horse, Critter. Her usual robes are a periwinkle blue, but she's known to wear lilac, also. And the linings of her outer robes and cloaks are always a fabric collage of life events or things she loves. In the North they call her Tolman. Once, when looking for Gandalf in the Shire, she came across a hobbit in distress. The wife of one Farmer Cotton had gone into labor while in one of the distant fields. Being too near delivery to return home, she was alone and panicked when Tolman found her. Arwe kept her calm and together they delivered a strapping young hobbit lad. Farmer and Mrs. Cotton promptly named him Tolman, but Arwe hears they usually call him Tom. Every year she sends him a present for his birthday and he sends one to her. And as Varda foretold, Arwe has received many gifts in Middle-earth. For pulling him from the gullet of a giant Flamingo, the Wizard Zion gave her the sentient sword, Swiftblade, to whom she speaks often but draws in battle seldom. Swiftblade doesn't seem to mind, for even though he is mighty in battle, the sword enjoys good conversation more. And he is not above a practical joke or two. She received a mithril compass from Orome on one of his many visits to Orthanc. It helps her keep her direction. She has received friendship and guidance from her Rulers and fellow Wizards, and feels safe in the knowledge that they care for her, even if she does something dumb. She has received the friendship of other races in Middle-earth, and basks in the warmth of the people of Gondor, and in the merriment of the Elves. The Riders, Hobbits and Dwarves she knows not as well, but has hopes to make friends among them, also. Laughter and joy flow through her days like fine wine, and all sorrow is carried away in the stream. Arwe belongs to the Order of Merlin and believes in its creed. She host's games for the inhabitants and visitors of Orthanc and derives more pleasure from them than the contestants. She rigs juries during trials, but only on the side of the angels. She is a foreign correspondent for the newspaper, The Heren Estarion Elen, reporting on the goings on in Gondor. She is a Lore Master of the White Council. She is content.

The robes are of a shimmering
blue which changes shade depending on the light I chose this colour
not only because it was your favourite but because it also highlights
the qualities which are so respected in you by those around you, those
being wisdom, intelligence and loyalty. You like solitude and are
happiest when alone with your own thoughts but yet are ever present
and ready to help out wherever help is needed. The pale lilac lining
of the robe emphasises your gentle and caring nature which is seen
everyday in the way you help confuzzled wizards. The small gold clasp
is in the shape of a wave to remind you of the place you hold closest
to your heart. I have kept the design simple and elegant with no ornate
patterns for you are someone who is up front and straight and who
needs no adornment to her outer beauty.

I’ve carved a few staffs, in my time, just for
those of the hiking persuasion. But the one I had to keep for my own,
is the worn down limb of a bristlecone pine. One the oldest living
things on earth. It was found in a land far away, known as Nevada,
high on a mountain ridge in a surreal forest of trees and worn down
stumps of three thousand year old trees. It almost looks like a straight
root, because of the twisting of the wood grain, and the hollows carved
out by time. It is well polished and gleams rusty red, with a little
deep yellow. A leather band is fastened around it as a grip, and the
bottom is shod with metal. A braided thong of leather holds a liquid
filled crystal, the Stone of Remembrance, so I can see again clearly,
the people and things I have seen in my life. A bear is carved on
top, in memory of one who loved staffs, and loved bears. The power
of the staff is the power of time, and the wisdom of age. |
