O Illuvatar’s staff is made of cedar wood that was given to him as a gift in Fangorn. It was carved in Minas Tirith by a friend of his father’s. He held it for a long time without any more additions to it. He once was in Khazad-Dum and he got a big well-carved diamond and four gems: One saphire, one ruby, one emerald, and a yellowish stone. O Illuvatar also asked the elves of Rivendell to make him a metal vine. It began at the very top of the staff and it spread throughout the staff that was 190 cm tall. At the top of the staff, there is four vine leaves, and on each one of the leaves there was a place for a different gem. At the center of the vine leaves, you find the Diamond. Now, the staff is very magical, especially since O Illuvatar became an istar of Ulmo and Mandos, for during the Day, when the staff was exposed to sunlight, you could sea a small ball inside the diamond as if the diamond was a spheric sea-reflection of the sun and it glowed in every possible way, whereas the gems gave out white light even though they were colored.But at night, when under moonlight and starlight, the satff seems to absorb all light that was about it and to reflect it as silvery gray light from the diamond. The gems, however, now glowed gently each in its original color.
