Haldir

We meet the character Haldir of Lothlórien, during chapters six to eight of the Fellowship of the Ring. Where he meets with the nine companions to lead them to Cerin Amroth, the heart of Lórien. There they meet the Lady Galadriel. He brings with him his brothers Rumil and Orophin.
"We seldom use any other tongue but our own; for we dwell now in the heart of the forest, and do not willingly have dealings with any other folk. Even our own kindred in the North have sundered from us. But there are some of us still who go abroad for the gathering of news ad the watching of our enemies, and they speak the languages of other lands. I am one. Haldir is my name. My brothers, Rumil and Orophin, speak little of your tongue."
Haldir serves as the fellowship's guide and leader, and often makes decisions on the treatment of the group.
"But we have heard rumours of your coming, for the messangers of Elrond passed by Lórien on their way home up to the Dimril Stair. We have not heard of-- hobbits, or halflings, for many a long year, and did not know that any yet dwelt in Middle-earth. You do not look evil! And since you come with an elf of our kindred, we are willing to befriend you, as Elrond asked; though it is not our custom to lead strangers through our land."
Haldir is of a suspicious nature, and throughout their journey he takes many precautions. Mostly with regard to the dwarf Gimli, son of Gloin, due to the their long lasting hostility.
Their journey through the golden wood is perilious however, and orcs manage to follow the companions into Lothlórien. Haldir and his brothers take care to call out in 'feigned voices' and they lead them away from the fellowship. After that Orophin is sent back to warn their people, and ensure that no orcs would exit the golden wood.
Thus they continued their journey, their next hinderance coming with the refusal of Gimli being blindfolded before the entrace of Lorien. Haldir however has no patience for the dwarf.
"You cannot go back, now you have come thus far, you must be brought before the Lord and the Lady. They shall judge you, to hold you, or give you leave, as they will. You cannot cross the rivers again, and behind you now, there are secret sentinels that you cannot pass. You would be slain before you saw them."
Here his gibes are matter-of-fact, even though there is a certain amount of arrogance in his tone of speech, but not as obvious as it is in the Haldir of the movie, his words are not meant to hurt-- merely to inform. Aragorn asks him to blindfold them all, and the elf agrees.
Their blindfolds are removed shortly after entering Cerin Amroth, and there is no ill-will between the companions and their leaders. Haldir leaves after he takes them to see the Lady, and it is told that he returns to the northern fences. He is seen again, a last time, when the companions prepare to leave the golden wood.
"I have returned from the Northern Fences, and I am now sent to be your guide again. The Dimrill Dale is full of vapour and clouds of smoke, and the mountains are troubled. There are noises in the deeps of the earth. If any of you had thoughts of returning northwards to your homes, you would not have been able to pass that way. But come! Your path now goes south."
He then leads the group to the river, where Galadriel waits. The Fellowship of the ring enter the boats given to them, and they are swiftly carried away from the land of Lothlórien.
This is the last time we see or hear of Haldir of Lorien, but it is assumed that he followed Celeborn and the rest of the Galadhrim to Mirkwood after the end of the War of the Ring.
