Merl Moriestiel

By Kinsley E. Schroeder

Born in the year 456 FA to a Noldorin lady and a Sindarin lord, she started her days in Doriath. The Dagor Bragollach had just been a year before, and grief still rendered in the halls of Thingol, but in these dark times a little ray of Light shone in the lives of Nénel and Súlvell Lacheleb. Arriving in the midst of darkness, the happy mother and father dubbed her Moriestiel, Nightwish in the tongue of men, in the language of the halls they resided. And thus, Moriestiel grew up in a small environment, for Súlvell was very protective about his little treasure. Of her first years she remembers little. Only the face of her beloved father and mother stay carved in her mind forever. For alas, this happiness was not meant to last long. It was but 15 years later that darkness struck again.

Súlvell is lost on a scouting mission outside the protective Girdle of the Lady Melian, murdered by a band of renegade orcs. This was in the same year as the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. Struck with grief, Nénel hides from the world, and her daughter joins her in hiding. Moriestiel is now then but 15 years of age. Six years later, she cannot bare her loss anymore and leaves the halls of Doriath, leaving her child only a delicate silver chain, an amethyst shaped much like an eye, deep purple with a black pupil in its midst. Nénel is last seen riding north, to where her beloved left the protective Girdle last. There, amidst a patch of trees, she lays herself to rest and her spirit flies through the clouded skies to the Halls. Their child remains in Menegroth, now orphaned.

Though sadness had struck her early in her long life, Moriestiel did not loose hope. Under the care of her father she had grown up to be a cheerful and kind child. Though the cheerfulness was replaced with a more thoughtful way of thinking, she was still kind to all she met, be they either elf or men, or even dwarf. She held no love for Morgoth Bauglír and his underlings though, as did many of her kin. She remained in the halls of Thingol and became a handmaiden of the lady Melian, from whom she learned much of the world outside the Girdle. 25 years later, death struck Doriath again with the passing of Elu Thingol. Melian too left the halls she had been happy in for so many a year, and her Girdle of Protection was lifted. This proved ill when 3 years later, when Dior Eluchîl had only been named Lord of Doriath for a year, the sons of Fëanor attacked and destroyed the halls. Many elves fled, and Moriestiel, who had been made maiden and friend of Nimloth Dior’s spouse, fled with them to the Mouths of Sirion.

She lived several years there, under the rule of Eärendil and Elwing, but grew restless. Much grief had befallen her since her birth, and she was still young, only 55 autumns she had seen. She hardly felt at home in the safekeeping of the remnants of Doriath and Gondolin, and wanted to do something. In the years of suspense she learned the powers of nature from a kind elf that had looked after her ever since her mother had left. Her name was Gîlariel, and she was a wise woman. She learned a little skill with a sword also from Gîlariel’s son Ihilin, though it was not great. As the years past her restless feeling grew, and there was a shiver of suspense in the air. Eärendil and Elwing had left the Havens, as well as Tuor and Idril, and many of the elves wondered what would happen next. 147 years after Moriestiel first saw the light, the War of Wrath was unleashed, Angband was taken down and Beleriand destroyed. Moriestiel went with the host of elves led by Ereinion Gil-Galad, and settled in Lindon.

It was there she met Laebeth Elvelethril, on one of her many journeys at the borders of Lindon. The elf was wounded after a heavy battle, and Moriestiel cared for her and tended her wounds. Out of this simple meeting, a great friendship grew, which later turned into family. For Moriestiel took on Laebeth as her daughter by heart, and they learned many things from each other. Moriestiels fighting skills were honed, and Laebeth learned the skills of Healing Moriestiel had learned from Gîlariel. Laebeth however had a wandering soul and travelled far and wide. Sometimes she would come with, but more oft Moriestiel stayed in Lindon or Mithlond and wrote or sang with the other elves. She travelled to Imladris at the end of the Second Age, just before the Last Alliance, and dwelled there. It was there she was reunited with Laebeth and her family, and it was joyous. In the Valley of Elrond she also met her son of heart, Laivindil. Her happiness was complete, even though grief struck again with the passing of King Gil-Galad, and she lived in Rivendell for many years with her heart family, taking up several duties that had to do with the things she loved so much. After many years however, her heart grew restless again, and leaving her daughter and son in the safekeeping of the Valley, she journeyed to Lothlórien and now dwells there, for how long she cannot say.
