Nimrodel

Beside the falls of the River Nimrodel, speaking only the Silvan tongue, dwelt the lady Nimrodel. She would not live among the Lorien elves because she felt that they had betrayed her trust when they defied the rule of the Valar, and fled out of the protection and comfort of the Valar, and into the wide and dangerous world of Middle Earth.

She was admired and loved by Amroth, King of Lorien, because although she rarely went into the company of the elves, she was sometimes sighted by wandering elves. After seeing her, and falling instantly in love, he had discarded his use of the Sindarin traditions and had lived in the manner of the Silvan and houses in the trees of a great mound that was forever after called Cerin Amroth. He would take no love, for his love for the maiden Nimrodel was so great, but she would not wed him. However she loved him with all her heart, for he was beautiful even for one of the elder, still she stayed true to her beliefs that the Sindarin brought all the evils of the world upon the elves when they came to Middle Earth.

When the great terror came out of the deeps of Moria, the Dwarves left, and in their absence the orcs crept in, in the year 1981 of the first age. Nimrodel fled distraught, and without aid, south into the empty lands. She was followed by Amroth, who at last found her beneath the eves of Fangorn, she would not go into the wood, for the trees menaced her and some moved to bar her way.

There after long debate, Nimrodel and Amroth at last decided on their fate. Nimrodel said “To this I shall be true, and we shall be wedded when you bring me to a land of peace.” Then Amroth vowed that for her sake he would leave his people, even in their time of dire need, and seek with her for such a land. And he said, “But there is none now in Midde Earth, and will not be for the elven folk ever again. We must seek for a passage over the great sea and into the ancient west.” He then told her of a haven in the south, where many of his people had landed when they came to Middle Earth long ago.

When they were journeying to the haven they were separated, and Amroth distraught sought Nimrodel in vain. Upon reaching the harbour he found that there were few of his kin left, they had almost all departed over the sea and into the west. There was less than one ship load of people remaining, and they had but one seaworthy ship. They welcomed Amroth, but were unwilling to await Nimrodel, whose coming seemed beyond hope to them. They said to him “If she came through the settled lands of Gondor, she would not be molested and might receive help. But in the mountains are many unfriendly men and evil things".

The year was waning to autumn, and great winds were expected. They were to be hostile and dangerous, even to elven ships when they were still close to Middle Earth. But Amroths grief was so great, that they stayed there going for many weeks, and they lived on the ships. Then in the Autumn there came a great storm from the cold Northern waste. The White Mountains were no shield against it, and many of the ships of men were swept into the bay of Belfalas and lost. The light weight elven ship was torn from the shore, into the wild waters towards the coast of Umbar. When Amroth woke, the ship was already far from land. Crying Nimrodels name out in despair, he lept into the sea, and swam towards the far off shore. The marinas, because of their elvish sight, could see him for a long time battling with the waves, until the rising sun lit his bright hair, like a speck of gold.

Of Nimrodel nothing else is said, except that seeking the sea, she became lost in the White Mountains, until by path or road it is not told, she came to a river that reminded her of her own little stream. Her heart was lightened, and she sat by a mere, watching the dim waters reflect the stars and listening to the waterfalls, by which the river made its way down to the sea. She then fell into a sleep of weariness, and slept so long that she did not come down unto Belfalas, until Amroths ship has been blown out to sea.

Nothing else is said of her fate. Some say she died swimming to find Amroth but none will ever know.
