Many years ago, two elves from quite different families and backgrounds came together. One was of the Noldor, the Deep Elves and Wise, the other Silvan, a woodland elf of the Nandor. One had been to Beleriand and come back to Rivendell. The other had seldom crossed the Misty Mountains and was now in Greenwood. But Fate has a wonderful way of making things happen and bringing the Children of Iluvatar together. And so it happened to these two elves in the early Third Age in Middle Earth.
Evil things were increasing again, and the areas around both Greenwood (later to be called Mirkwood) and Lothlórien were soon to become places of danger. Yet the times were still gentle and only unspoken concerns marred the days and nights. And these two elves, Eiliniel from Imladris and Angluin from Thranduil’s Kingdom, came together on a chance meeting in Lothlórien and fell in love. After some discussion, the families blessed the union and in elven manner and in a suitable time, they were joined together.
The ceremony, such as it was, took place in Lothlórien where both now resided and was celebrated by their friends and family. In due time after some number of years, they were blessed with the arrival of a child. And that child was a joy to both parents and all concerned. And it was decided that they would as soon as reasonable for Eiliniel, venture forth and travel first to Imladris and then on to Greenwood to see both families and show then their child before returning to Lothlórien.
Yet, now the times were becoming increasingly perilous, as word came that fell things were being reported in the Misty Mountains and there were rumors of an evil presence in the area of Angmar. But still the couple decided to press on with their journey. Traveling with friends, they crossed the mountains and so were in little worry of attack. Eiliniel's family welcomed them in Rivendell and after a goodly visit, tried to discourage them from continuing on to Greenwood. The couple with their child, who was now about 3 or 4, having made the crossing one way, discussed the matter and, although Eiliniel was somewhat concerned, they finally agreed that there should be little problem continuing and so set out.
This time they decided to head north before crossing the mountains, hoping to come out of the mountains and have little of Greenwood to travel through before coming upon Thranduil's kingdom. But upon venturing out from Rivendell, as they continued north, they came within sight of a large group of orcs. Believing they had been seen and were being followed, and now cut off from returning to the south, they turned northwest hoping to cross the Mitheithel and lose the fell creatures in the Ettenmoors.
At the river, they met several families of halflings, Periannaith of the Fallohides clan, going by the name Oldbucks. The halflings were traveling down the river and away from the orcs. Hoping to gain time and speed and fearing for the safety of their child, with great trepidation, they gave up their child to the care of the halflings, telling them that they would continue leading the orcs to the north, and upon losing them, would return and catch up with the families on the East West Road before Bree. Angluin tried to dissuade Eiliniel from accompanying him, but believing their child to be safe, she determined to stay with him. With their child secure and knowing that the Fallohides were knowledgeable in some elven lore, they said their farewells. The records show that that was the last known place of Eiliniel and Angluin as they were never heard from again.
The Oldbucks graciously took the child and continued down the river and waited on the East-West Road, until finally word reached them of the demise of a party of elves far to the north. Not knowing what to do, and not knowing the whereabouts of Imladris, they continued on to Bree and eventually to the Baranduin River where they turned north and finally settled among other halflings. And now they had an elf child to care for. Knowing few elven names, they gave her the name of one they remembered from songs, TinuvielLuthien, and called her Nuviel from that time on.
Nuviel was raised by the Oldbucks, and spent many generations at the hobbit’s home, helping each generation with child raising and housekeeping and chores. As the Shire was mostly cut off from the rest of Middle Earth, so this home was even more remote than that. They farmed some and hunted some, and Nuviel learned a little of both.
After a number of years, Nuviel finally determined to understand and find her place in Middle Earth and with the blessing of her adopted family, and writings made by the first Oldbucks about the nature of her adoption to be given to her when the time came, she set out to search for any of her family. She traveled up and down the Baranduin as far north as Evendim and south beyond Sarn Ford. And then one day she met a group of elves journeying West. Asking them about where they came from, she turned east towards Rivendell. There, she found friends and a family that she cherishes to this day, and she was welcomed into the Imladris and contributed to its growth.
And then, a number of elves decided to move to Lothlórien, her original home, and begin building that realm anew, including many (but not all) of her friends and family. And she joined with them and arrived in Caras Galadhon ready to take on whatever tasks she could. And there she now resides, although she has a special place in her heart for a certain family of Hobbits who still live to the north of Brandy Hall.
I was born in Lothlorien near the beginning of the Third Age to Eiliniel, a Noldor elf from Imladris and Angluin, a Nandor elf from Greenwood who had both come to Lothlorien, met and were joined together. When I was around three or four we traveled across the Misty Mountains to Rivendell to visit with my mother’s family before going on to Thranduil’s Kingdom to visit with my father’s family.
The first part of the journey was without problem but upon leaving Rivendell to the worry of my mother’s family, we headed north and came upon a band of orcs that were now present in the area. Cut off from returning, we turned towards the Mitheithel and hopefully, lose the fell creatures in the Ettenmoors.
