Thus it was that when Amroth was king of Lothlorien, Pengedhel was always at his side, advicing him and lending him his support. On the one occasion that he was sent as ambassador to Elrond of Imladris he unwittingly escaped the attack of the Balrog on Lorien. When Pengedhel heard of the news he cried out in dismay. He wasted no time in returning, only to hear that Amroth had disappeared. In vain he searched for his king whom he failed in duty. But he was unsuccessful. When it became clear that Amroth, the last Silvan King of Lothlorien, was indeed lost to Middle-earth, he returned home to the Golden Woods, burdened with sorrow.

On his journey back he happened upon two young elves. They hid like young animals beneath a rock that served as a shallow cave, and watched with wide-eyed fear as they saw the elf approach. Pengedhel’s heart was won by the sight of the dirty, scrawny elves, and he took them under his wing until they reached Lorien.

At Lorien, Celeborn and Galadriel had begun to restore some semblance of order in a land so recently wrought with fear, terror and destruction. They were delighted to see Pengedhel still alive and well, and bestowed on him the task of assuring his kith and kin that all would be well again with Lothlorien. Finding that the two young elves had lost their parents to the horror, Pengedhel took it upon himself to care for them and bring them up. Dinendal and Anendel he named them.

It was this Silvan elf who was the brain behind the strategy used in the battle against Dol Guldur, under the command of Lord Celeborn. Pengedhel remains, until this day, one of the most trusted nobles of the Lord and Lady of the Golden Woods.
