Long ago, Mordor was a barren land, and naught was there which bore semblance to the empire which later arose. Then the Dark Lord Sauron came through the mountains and established Barad-dûr, that mighty black tower in the midst of the realm. From thence he built up a great kingdom of evil which became a threat and bane to the free realms of Middle-earth.
