Word Sleuth is based upon the game of Scrabble, the difference between them being that Word Sleuth is Middle-earth oriented. It was created by Mo and Luthy and came to the plaza in November 2003. The rules have changed a bit since the first competition, but the object of the game is still to make interlocking words on the board in crossword fashion. There are four teams comprised of two kingdoms, which take turns placing their words on the board, each aiming for the most points possible. Bonuses are granted for words that are found in Tolkien’s works, if the team provides a quote proving it.

After the Mordor Cup, the Word Sleuth season started. Ninety games were slated to take place over the course of thirty weeks, but because of time restraints and lack of interest, the season concluded after thirteen weeks. Mordor finished with a record of four wins and three losses and an average of 605 points a game. Since then, there have been a few games played, mostly for special occasions.
