Raskolnikov (Rodya) is a man of the Lossoth, he was exiled from his community because of several dissolute malefactions, though he didn’t see what he had done as morally corrupt in anyway. In fact Rodya is the prime example of a man who had no morals whatsoever. He does not care that he commits acts of, what other people would call, evil, for he is an atheist and cares not for his eternal soul or anyone else’s. He is not a sociopath who derives pleasure from killing and brutality, but he most certainly does act violently and unscrupulously, and without compunction or recognition of his sins. The man simply followed no moral principles, not through a desire to contravene unspoken doctrines of humanity but simply because he didn’t know right from wrong, as this was not how he saw the world. He was motivated purely by self-interest in everything he did, he would rape and kill women if he felt like it or he might murder a child if he felt he was to profit from such an action.
Rodya is a ruggedly handsome man, and this serves him well in his dealings with others, he will usually speak in mellifluous tones appearing to be benevolent and magnanimous. Thus does he always appear to be candid and wise. He can be loyal when it suits him and duplicitous when it does not. No matter what the situation he always presents himself an ingenuous version of himself; his anti-thesis as it were. Betrayal and deception do not impinge upon his conscience, it is simply what he does to serve his own end and that is justification enough for him.
The crux of his character is quite simple; he is a cold and calculating abhorrence. Whilst he is motivated by self-interest, he is not self-absorbed, he can and does love things other than himself. He is not arrogant or narcissistic in anyway. Though he is proud of his ability in battle, he is never boastful. He is not quick to anger and will usually play off insults with a lilting chuckle or a stoic disregard. He is not easily offended, for he doesn’t care about other people’s opinions, as he sees most people to be quite puerile and moronic and thus their opinions hold no value for him. In short he is an anathema, his disregard for the lives and wellbeing of others and his will to exploit anything and everything available to him, make him an extremely dangerous man.
