Q: Who are the Rulers of the Riddermark, and what are they for?

A: The Rulers of our fair kingdom are Imbeannowyn (Lord Éomer of the Mark) and Celinawyn (Lady Éowyn). They were elected to rule over the fair realm of The Riddermark and ensure nothing threatens the present prosperity.

Q: How do I get a horse?

A: When you joined the Riddermark you automatically received the right to own a horse. To make this horse as “real” as it were, simply go to The Show Ring and post a description of your horse. In other words, describe what its name is, what colour hair it has, how old it is and other things relating to it. Once you’ve done this, your horse is part of you and you may use it in any RPGS in The Riddermark or in any occasion you wish.

Q: What is the Cavalry, what is its purpose, and how do I join?

A: The Cavalry is the military organization of Rohan, which in keeping with the spirit of the Plaza, uses knowledge of Tolkien and Middle Earth to protect and serve Rohan. All riders in good standing are eligible for service regardless of Plaza rank. Take the Cavalry Exam here after reading the Cavalry Page, which explains the Cavalry, its rules and its purpose in more detail.

Q: How do we fight wars, and go on quests?

A: This is called RPG, or Role-playing. Quite simply, it's playing Pretend, except with words. For a complete explanation, go to The RPG Guidelines page. For just a small example:
"*Eowyn jumped up from her spot by the campfire with an exclamation of surprise.* Orcs! To arms, to arms, Eorlingas! *Pulling out her sword she raced for her horse Elennar, mounting in one swift, fluid movement. Wheeling around she slashed at the nearest orc, her sword Wynelensil glinting redly. Suddenly she heard a shout: "Behind you, Eowyn!" Turning in the saddle she blocked a Mordorian's axe with her shield just in time.* Thanks, Hama! *She yells back.*"
A last note: Please remember to always read the other posts before you write your own, and try to stay on topic.

Q: Where should I go to ask questions?

A: For Riddermark-related questions, please go to the current Newbie Hall thread in The Riddermark. Both Rulers and Riders check there often, and you'll be sure to get your question answered as quickly as possible.
For any general plaza life questions, or introductions, go to the Newbies & Introductions Forum.
Another great place to go is the Geferehus Kingdom House, where Riders and visitors can take all their problems, whether it is a simple newbie question, or difficulties they are having with running their house. You will also find all kinds of important and useful information there.
If you have any problems with the plaza, you can air them in the Administrators Messages Forum.
For any questions about Middle Earth, take them to one of the many Middle Earth forums pertaining to your question, where people of all races can consider and reply to your query.

Q: I'm looking for a thread, but I can't seem to find it anywhere! What do I do?

A: Your thread may have been bumped back to the second or even third page. Whenever someone posts in a thread, the thread is bumped to the top of the forum; if there are no posts in a certain thread for a long time, that thread eventually gets knocked back to another page. At the bottom of the forum is a button labeled "Next Topic": you click it and it will take you back to the second page of the most recent threads. You may have to go back several pages to find your thread, but you should recover it eventually. If you still cannot find it, it may have been deleted or moved by a Ruler or an Administrator, which means it was inappropriate for the forum in which it was originally posted.
If the thread is very old, or the Admins have been working on tidying the plaza recently, it may have been stored to one of the plaza archives, a place where old threads are saved so that you can still view them even years later. To view the most recent Riddermark achives, click on these links: (October 2005) (December 2004) (April 2004) (June 2003) or if you have a specific address for the thread, then you can find it another way. In the http address at the top of the screen, replace the word "forum/" with "archive4/" or "archive3/" etc. and then press "Go". This should make it appear, and hopefully you will find it.

Q: How do I get/change my signature?

A: On the sidebar, beneath your username and amount of points you'll see "edit/view profile". Clicking on that will take you to your profile, and beneath that you will see "edit your profile". That link will take you to where you can make changes to your profile, and down, second from the bottom, you will see "Signature" to the left, and to the right, a little box. Whatever you type in there will appear at the bottom of your post. Don't forget to click "Update Profile"!

Q: How did Dr. Pepper come to be such an integral part of the history of our fair Kingdom?

A: Well, one fine day near the start of our kingdom, there was a lonely pub where Riders stopped for hearty food and stiff drinks, as well as the occasional bit of gossip. And in this pub there was a young rider named Rufie who decided she was tired of all the dark ales and bitter beers. She wanted something sweet, something bubbly, and most of all something that went well with badger burgers. On that day, she introduced Dr. Pepper to the land of Rohan. At first the people were skeptical, but they soon came to see that the drink was refreshing and delicious. And it also had the curious side effect of making them all happy and high. So from that day forth Dr. Pepper was named the official drink of the Rohirrim. And everyone lived happily ever after.

Q: What is with the badgers?

A: It is a long and complicated tale, and begins with the first meeting of the ELPs, or Elf Preservation Society. This society, started to address the cause of numerous elves leaving Rivendell for other kingdoms, was founded by Vivienne, the Poetry Maia, who was at that time an elf. In a rally for this society, she mentioned giving out 'badgers' to the members of the ELPs when she meant 'badges'. Dai Shan, another prominent elf, found this quite amusing, and so brought a netful of irate badgers to the first official meeting of ELPs, causing general havoc and dismay, as badgers are quite fierce, and are prone to bite. Luckily, Osse came along and turned them all into badger-on-a-stick, a most delightful and nourishing entrée. But, soon becoming bored with this plain fare, we began to experiment with delicious and varied badger dishes, one of our favorites being the badger burger, a delight to say as well as to eat. The riders took this dish upon themselves, making it a common meal in their pubs and parties, 'til it grew to a tradition. We have fought several battles for the right of serving badger in our fair gold halls, some with Viv the Poetry Maia, Patron goddess of Badgers, but have preserved our right to consume this delicacy, and even today you may find it in our pubs or gracing our banquet tables.

Q: What is M.E.A.R.A.S.?

A: M.E.A.R.A.S. stands for the Meduseld Expansion And Rohan Appreciation Society. This society was created in the days when the Riddermark, then called Meduseld, was young, the amount of Riders few, and the need for recruitment was felt. M.E.A.R.A.S. evolved into a place where new riders could ask questions and have them answered, and also a place where the Riders of Rohan could discuss ideas on the improvement of Rohan. Nowadays, M.E.A.R.A.S. is a thing of the past, and you'll not even find it residing in the signatures of its former members. The Newbie Hall, the Geferehus Kingdom House and the Gaedrian have taken the places it once filled in the Riddermark, but it is still remembered fondly by many of the older members, and you can read the old threads of its exploits in the archives of the Mark.

Q: What is the Rædboda?

A: The Raedboda is the newsletter of the Riddermark that exists to give the riders a picture of what is going on in the outside world and in other parts of The Riddermark. The whole thing is run by Éile and Elarith whom you may have seen around the kingdom so don’t hesitate to ask them if you have any questions. One thing is for sure though, we are always looking for new writers or fresh ideas so feel free to post in the latest planning thread if you have a new idea or wish to join the writing team. To see past issues, please see The Raedboda page on our own kingdom pages.

Q: How come some people have special icons which are different than the usual kingdom rank icons?

A: Every Ruler of a kingdom on the Plaza has his or her own icon. For the Riddermark Rulers, these icons represent the Lord Éomer and the Lady Éowyn. Then there are Special Character Ranks or “SCRs” as most people call them for short. These are unique for every kingdom and are handed out to worthy members each month. It is simply a way of recognising those who contribute a lot to The Riddermark. If you work hard, write excellent posts and jump into many activities with enthusiasm and new ideas you may get one!

Q: I have an idea for a thread - can I open it?

A: Not right away. If you have a new thread idea then post the thread idea in the Gædrian of se Mark and the Rulers will review your idea. If they like it they will give you permission to open it. If they don’t then you can’t, but don’t be put off by that. Many thread ideas don’t get passed and it is rarely because of the individual. Usually it is either that the thread idea you’re suggesting has either already been implemented or something similar is already running. Or it may be that it is simply the wrong time for the thread idea.

Q: How can I contact the Rulers?

A: Simply e-mail them at Riddermark@lotrplaza.com.

Q: Where can I find a list of the main activities in the Kingdom?

A: There are two places for this. The first is the Newbie Hall which has a definitive list of activities in the opening post. The second place to go is the Geferehus, which offers a page explaining every regular thread in the Riddermark and every house in Rohan.
For a more general idea of what’s going on in the Kingdom you may also want to check the Rædboda, which regularly has articles on the latest activities. In addition to this important things like the awarding of SRCs will appear on the Kingdom’s forum page in the marquee near the top of the page so watch out for that as well.

With thanks to Eomund Firehelm and Fyrefly for additional text and updates.

If you come across any errors in the Kingdom Pages, email the rulers.
We welcome your suggestions!
