Rohirric Language

Welcome to the Rohirric Language Kingdom Pages!

In the Riddermark forum on the Plaza, we use many Old English (OE) words or roots to form our names, thread titles, and other terms. This is meant to be a simple glossary of useful terms one might wish to know, especially if you are new to our kingdom.
Of course, this is not a representation of the actual language spoken by the Riders of Rohan. Just as Tolkien represented the Common Speech with Modern English when he "translated" LotR from the Red Book, he represented the Rohirric language with ancient English (commonly referred to as Old English or Anglo-Saxon). There are only a few bits of true Rohirric which are known to us.

Just click the linked icons below.

True Rohirric

Again, there are a few bits of true Rohirric that Tolkien gives us, but here are the ones we do know:

kastu: [LotR, pg.IIIO]
kud-dukan: "hole-dweller" [LotR, pg.IIII]
lo-, loho-: eo-/eoh-, "horse"[HoME:XII, pg.53(?)]
Lograd: Eo-marc [HoME:XII, pg.53(?)]
Lohtur: Eotheod [HoME:XII, pg.53(?)]
trahan: "burrow" [LotR, pg.IIIO]

If you come across any errors in the Kingdom Pages, email the rulers.
We welcome your suggestions!
