I am Bereth, of the Clan of Ethias, and I come from the Western regions of Rohan at the foothills of the Ered Nimrais not far from Edoras. Centuries ago members of my family discovered a skill for craftsmanship, fashioning some of the finest saddles and bridles in all of Rohan. Through the years, many have also become adept at designing and producing articles of clothing that are highly prized. Some of what is created of both crafts have found their way into the Royal household, resulting in a long standing business relationship being established with the Leaders of Rohan. Because of this, and also as a result of many long hours in close proximity working our crafts, we of my kin have become gatherers and recorders of lore from many lands and races, and have passed that love of lore down through the generations. The office of Larmaegister (Loremaster) of the Mark is an honor few hold in Rohan, and just recently I was appointed that honor, which I accepted with humble gratitude. Another note of interest due to trade with other races would be that many ages ago, or so the tales go, some from my family had dealings with the Edain, and especially of the house of Baragund. A chance encounter with a woman of that house, Bereth, the aunt of Morwen, left such an impression on the kinfolk that they named their next girl-child after her. It soon became a tradition that when the one who holds the namesake passes on, the next female child born of any of the kin is bestowed with the honored name of Bereth. Hence, my name, a sort of sacred trust. Secretly, like many girls in Rohan, I began at an early age to ride and use weapons, even though the chances of my ever using such skills were almost nonexistent. My horse is named Sedryn, and we have been together many years now. He is not the swiftest of steeds, but is well-muscled and powerful, and excels in quick turns, stops and maneuvers. My weapon of choice is a light bow (and I am deadly accurate with it), but I am fairly capable with the sword as well. Against all odds, I have been recruited into the Cavalry, and undergone training for war. I have been called upon for but one battle, and am eagerly anticipating more. Defense of our homeland is the highest calling of a Rider. |
